Amanda Carreras also WCMsmile

How odd to see Mel getting a WCM in an event like this, though it's 99% certain she won't need it.

p.s. A better choice of word than "odd" for what I meant would have been "strange".

I am aghast at those wild card choices and am struggling to find the reasoning behind them.

My four picks would have been.

1. Naomi Broady
2. Anna Smith
3. Johanna Konta - assuming she is still on the road to becoming a Brit.
4. Tara Moore

All of these four are in form and could make decent headway in the main draw.

As for the four that have been picked.

1. Mel - won't need it.
2. Emily - out of form and too old in my opinion to warrant a wild card. No disrespect to Emily who I admire for her courage to comeback from one injury after another.
3. Jade - sadly hasn't shown the development needed to be competitive at this level. May do in the future but not at the moment
4. Amanda - well this a left field selection and she has shown a bit better form recently but is in my opinion well below this class of field on this surface.

In fact I would have chosen Lisa Whybourn before any of these four but admitedly at the moment she is struggling to show her best form on her comeback.

Any reason why the women's WCs are always announced a week in advance but we never find out the men's until the draw comes out on Monday evening? Are both awarded by the LTA or by the tournament organisers?

If the venue has had a say then fair enough but, to my thinking, the giving out of wild cards so be a crucial part of "British Tennis" and part of a success driven structure.

I presume wild cards are given for good work in training, some good performances some weeks earlier or something of that nature. It therefore from the outside dosen't make much sense and leaves the door open to accusations of favouritism.

I just think there should be a clear structure. Win a British Tour, then WC into next 10k. Best perfromances in 10k result in WC for a 25k etc etc. Of course the tournaments may need re-structuring but, there should be a whole overall plan to this.....its just too random at times.

An example would be on the mens side. James Ward received a WC into this weeks Bath futures. I know he had just played Davis Cup but I do not believe he should have (he'd easily have made the draw had he entered before the cut off date). He lost in the 1st round. Now what will be interesting is if he was to receive a WC into Jersey. He surely wont but, in the past things like this have happened.

Tennis is a tough sport where the diference between winning and losing can be such a fine line. You can win the more points but lose the match. Our WC reward structure should reflect this.

Have a bit of bad luck along the way yet still get a WC......"life" on the circuit isn't like this so why build it into British Tennis???????

I agree with much of what Phil says, in particular re the WC to EWS and to a large extent Jade too, maybe rather less so Amanda who has been showing more encouraging signs again.

How they are preferred to Anna and Naomi for WCs, who knows.  Well on Naomi, one unfortunately might have a guess or two.

Anna has taken real steps recently and I'm actually amazed that she isn't awarded a WC for Jersey.

I agree - I was just updating the best 16 lists last night and since the start of the year, Anna has gone:

10K semi, 10K QF, 25K semi, 10K semi, 10K QF - what more does she have to do to get a WC into a home 25K?! confuse

Am I right in thinking that if Anna is given the WCM then Amanda Elliott will automatically get a place in qualifying, meaning there is another WCQ to be given out?

Yes, I think so, though I wouldn't be surprised if last minute w/ds have got Amanda directly into qualifying already.

Shame that Whybourn drew Broady, but I don't think she's had enough matches back yet to be able to challenge Naomi. Hopefully Anna will be able to come through too but all 3 of the girls in her section looked pretty good in Bath.

Where did you find the draw?
