Week 11 Futures - Kazakhstan F1 ($15k) - Astana

L32: Alex Slabinsky WR 735 v Dzmitry Zhyrmont (BLR) WR 689 - Tuesday

Zhyrmont is 0-4 against Brits in singles, having lost to both Seator and Eaton in 2007 and to both Thornley (3 & 3) and Dr No (bagel in the 3rd) in November 2009.

The winner is likely to play (6) Ilya Belyaev (RUS) WR 404 in R2.

Wow, what a weird place to go, costs £800 minimum for the flight, why not play at Bath for half the cost?

Because he scraped a DA here (he'd have had to qualify in Bath) and the draw will be weaker.

Not sure what to make of that scoreline but at least Slabba won and has made some use of this trip to Kazakhstan.

Looks like it all hinged on the second set tiebreak and judging by the capitulation I would suggest that Zhyrmont was either a break up at some point in the second set or wasted a ton of match points and just lost his head.

Slabba at his best should be able to beat Belyaev so if he is back towards that level then another win could be on the cards.

Rice had a  0 - 6  6 - 1  7 - 6  ( 5 )  win in Canada QF last week.

At least a 0 - 6  7 - 6 ( 4 )  6 - 0   is kind of following a trend in one direction  smile

Certainly some strange scores around lately.

Didn't Venus Williams and Clijsters both bagel each other in the US Open last year? Not sure what the final scoreline was though.

You didn't:  I always check the draw sheets before I come on here!  nana.gif   That almost invariably means, however, that I find I've been pipped at the post. bleh

Shame for Slabba to lose and it hasn't been the greatest start to the year but he is looking better and hopefully the points will start to come at some point.

SF:  (1) Alexander Peya (AUT) & Alex Slabinsky WR 428 defeated (3) Ivan Anikanov (UKR) & Murad Inoyatov (UZB) WR 577 by 6-4 3-6 [10-2] smile

Final:

(1) Alexander Peya (AUT) & Alex Slabinsky WR 428 vs (2) Evgeny Kirillov & Alexander Kudryavtsev (RUS/RUS) WR 429

The pairs could hardly be more evenly matched, though the Alexanders would appear to outnumber the Evgenys! wink  I hope Slabba's learning some useful new tricks from Peya.
