Week 10/11 - WTA Premier Mandatory ($4.5M) - Indian Wells CA, USA - hard

Anne is in the main draw with her SR, Elena just missed out and Katie was down to play qualifying but is not in the Q draw:

QR1: (q1) Elena Baltacha WR 64 v (WC) Julia Boserup (USA) WR

Boserup beat Mel South 2-6 6-3 6-0 in Surprise last month and Jade Curtis 1 & 3 in Plantation in January, though neither of those results should worry Elena. She also lost to Anna Fitzpatrick in 2007, though she had only just turned 16 back then.

The likely opponent in the FQR for the winner of this match is (q20) Ekaterina Bychkova (RUS) WR 109, who beat Mel South 3 & 4 in Brisbane WTA Q last year, Anne 1 & 5 in New Haven WTA Q in 2008 and Amanda Janes in 2005, so is 3-0 lifetime v Brits. It's 7-0 including doubles, where Elena faced her across the net way back in 2004 in Poitiers.

The Russian girl won the last time they played but I would still be hopeful of the win.
Second round probably too tough but Anne gave her a decent match at the Fed cup last year.

Doh! Elena managed a 70% 1st serve % for the first two games and won two love games, then got just 1/8 1st serves in during her next service game and got broken. 2-4*

... and now she's been broken to love for the set 2-6 - hope she hasn't picked up an injury.

While I was working, it's moved onto 1-3* in the final set = just one break, on Boserup's 2nd break point of the set. Elena has failed to take 6 bps in this set so far ... and now at last she's converted one - *2-3.

Now 4-4*, 15-40, 2nd serve, come on Elena, time to put this match to bed ...

breaks *5-4, she'll serve for the match smile.gif

And she's done it smile.gif - 94-92 to Boserup in points, 5 breaks each, but Elena split them over the sets better to win 2-6 6-4 6-4 smile.gif

She'll have to up her game against Bychkova in the FQR, I feel.

Well, if nothing else that should make Mel feel a bit better!

Playing at 4.00 GMT can't have helped her game though.

According to her twitter she played her best tennis of the year to date. Boserup played unbelievably.
