Hours after our poll showed about 75% support for the Ruser becoming the next DC captain, OEM reports that ...

"Greg Rusedski is being primed to become Great Britains fifth Davis Cup captain in ten years after the latest in a series of ritual humiliations in the competition yesterday.

As John Lloyd was left to ponder his future as the first Briton in 110 years to captain five consecutive losing teams, The Times understands that Rusedski has been approached by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) to see if he is interested in the job."

I voted for Petch too - I think Greg will make a very good DC captain, but I think he'd do better post-Andy when some of the kids he's been coaching (in junior DC, for example) are in the team, and I don't really want him to have done it and been discarded before then.

I thought he'd been working with guys like Carpenter and Hewitt? Are they realistically going to be making a DC team, surely it will be Morgan and Golding even if they are a couple of years younger.

a few people suggesting Petch i see, what's his relationship with the LTA/Andy? has he ever made comment regarding wanting the job?


Obviously Andy seems to be the deciding factor, it shouldn't be, but it almost certianly will be.

Not officially of course, they can't really do that can they? But Neil Harman of the Times says Greg has been approached, presumably unofficially, and Neil is very often right!

Harman often knows what goes on yes, but sometimes in the past i think his desire to get the jump on a story has led to mistakes/inaccuracies - the boggo racquets thing and the mis-quote from this forum spring to mind.

however in thsi case i suspect he is onto something, as you say the LTS can't admit it. not sure why they would need to speak to greg 1st tho, his public statements/twitters have made his feels clear.

I wish him all the best if he accepts and lates face it it would be the best time to take over this job as surely the only way is up from this position. Hopefully he will be able to inspire our players.

I see Anne Keothavong has come out publicly in support of JL again, even if he seems to be second in importance to some actress's dress ...

"Cameron Diaz's dress was my favourite at the Oscars and I still think John Lloyd is a top bloke." (on twitter)

Having said that, "top bloke" and "good captain" aren't the same thing, so he may well be the former.

One big issue with Greg that has been brought up in some of the media today is that by all accounts, he doesn't get on very well with Muzza, e.g. Muzza's "Yeah, who are these 'experts'?" Murray asked, rhetorically. "Barry Cowan? Greg Rusedski? I think I know more about tennis than Barry and Greg." comment last year.

That said, we probably need someone who is prepared to think for themselves (including picking the team themselves) and stand up to Andy - JL's apparent kow-towing to him never really did him any good, and Andy was at the front of the 'bin Boggo, pick Evo' mob, if I remember right and it has hardly resulted in a miraculous turnaround.

Yes, I wouldn't put any perceived relation problems with Andy as no-no.

In the first instance I am more interested in a captain who will think for himself, pick who he thinks is best and inspire overall team spirit, particularly in the other players.  Andy, when the time comes, I think will give his best, but its maybe no bad thing if he has less influence.  Those quoted comments show someone who can occasionally be a bit too full of himself.  And if he thought Dan instead of Boggo a good idea, maybe not as expert as he thinks he is.
