That says it all really..

Eaton is most definitely capable of losing (albeit only a set in this instance) to a player ranked in the region (lower infact!) than the Turkish No 2.  Yes, yes he is capable of unsettling a higher ranked opponent but in reality he is definitely not to be relied upon as a front runner. We need to look elsewhere if we want to get through the tie without fretting over losing a set/match to a player ranked 800 in the world.

I have never been to Eastbourne, but I have a mental image of a genteel, gentrified almost geriatric sort of place. Outdoors it will be difficult to generate the atmosphere which would make good use of our home tie. It is a good idea to take the DC to major cities with a noisy crowd.

my thought exactly clayfan this was my initial thought as expressed at AM.com

"anyone think the LTA want to hide us in a tiny little corner of finest middle England very rarefied and genteel so no one notices if we fall through the trapdoor to ignominy "

and that was without me thinking about the world cup!

(He played Sletting-Johnsen and Groth on slow indoor hardcourts them days due to rain. So thats why he struggled there.)

Yes, he has lost to players he shouldn't have, it annoys me, on some occasions you think he should be walking over them but he still ends up losing. But this isnt where he plays his best tennis, yes it is frustrating. I have seen him play at a couple of futures, he's nothing like what you expect from when we seen him at Wimby and DC. He just doesnt look that into it, which is bad, but understandable if you want to be showing off to crowds and taking on the pressure.

Big events are where his game really steps it up, its not about how he can lose to anyone there, because he brings out his best tennis (which is easily top 200 standard- especially on grass). Wimby and DC are great examples where he wants to show what he can do. (Glasgow final this year as well, around 500 viewers i heard turned up, i wasn't suprised to see Eaton beat Jamie that day if that was the case.)

When he played DC last year, he looked the part, he never got nervous on big points. Played very good tennis and was impressive enough to take a set off Stak and beat Marchenko.

I posted this in the new DC captain thread, but it is relevent to the tie with Turkey so I have pasted it here too.

Article in the Glasgow Herald this morning. Their chief sports editor is in Miami and has been speaking to Andy Murray. He has written that "Leon Smith has emerged as the strong favourite to captain the Great Britain Davis Cup team." "He is set to succeed John Lloyd .."

The interview asks Andy about playing in the tie against Turkey and his reaction to JL criticising him for not being available for the Lithuania tie. He pointed out that he has to continue to put his career first. He pointed out he got injured in the last tie with Poland and took time and points off his schedule. "I need to make a decision on what's best, not only for the team but also my own career." He says other top players duck out of playing Davis Cup too. (So it looks like a no, then!)

The way Andy played today against Fish, I'm not at all sure, even if he played this tie, that he would beat Ilhan!
