I think you have to have a squad of players for the DC captain to choose from and maybe not a straight 4 that will play every match. We cant think of a straight 4 yet, as they will struggle to play best tennis on all surfaces so, yes you may have to mix it to get the strongest team out there, but you'll get more wins that way.

From this squad of say 6, you have players that can play on certain surfaces better than others.

Boggo- Have him as your all round surface player. (Probably play every match)
Ward- Slower surfaces
Baker- Slower surfaces
Evo- Probably slower surfaces
Eaton- Grass and fast indoor hard


and then your doubles players on top of that.

With this squad you can pick the best team for the designated court. So if that means picking Ward for 3 ties and him doing well and the next ones on grass, yes maybe we do drop him as he's not as strong on that as maybe others are.

I wouldnt worry about building a strong morale 4 man squad yet unless they can show consistency on every surface and breakaway from the other brits in the rankings. All we need now are wins, its been too long!

Why is Ward being dismissed as a slow court player ?

He qualified for Queens and took a set off Safin a few years ago, won his first ATP match on grass last summer.

He won a Davis Cup live rubber on a very fast indoor hard court a couple of weeks ago

Ward has a really big serve so definately has the weapons to do well on fast surfaces

Evo is more suited to medium surfaces, he's not great on clay

Although Ward did win a match on grass last year against Crivoi, it was one of the nicest draws that he could have got against a man who was only there for the paycheck, and also pushed Dancevic in the second round, he struggled severly against Baghdatis and Verdasco, who are both very good players, but never looked like giving them a tough time.

Ward is undoubtely one of our better players on a slower court but on a grass court there may be better options (but until the grass season begins we don't really know who has made an improvement on that surface)

I dont think Ward has any or very little ability at the net as i remember from watching him play Dancevic. He sits too much on the baseline to win his points.

On grass you have to be able to end the points quick. Yes his serves pretty big, but if its returned deep, he then has to start the point again from the back of the court and hopefully force an error or hit a winner. If he comes up against a more solid player from the back than himself, where does he go then.

I think Goodall and Eaton have the edge over Ward on grass in my opinion.

if people must insist on eaton it would make much more sense putting him in against teams with high ranked players, not low ranked players, because he could lose to anyone, too much of a risk

If its a big occasion Eaton will bring out his best tennis. Doesnt matter who he plays.

He performed better tennis than Evo, Goodall and Ward in DC in my opininon.

He should definitely be picked if its on grass.

Yes, very good point.  He is a player maybe to be considered on grass if we are underdogs.  At this stage he is just to me so not the player you want vs Turkey when there are quite a number of players who would more certainly get the job done against whoever the Turkey no 2 is.

Its not about if Eaton can't play against lower ranked players, it makes no difference in DC.

DC brings out the best in Eaton, I dont think he cares whos on the other side of the net, he wants to win and will play his best to do that.

Eaton after Boggo and Andy is are stongest player on grass, so dont say about others could do the job better, because they're not as good as Eaton on grass.

spud how can you not see eaton is the sort of player you throw in if we would probaly lose anyway, as if hes on form, his serve could win it, not the sort you put in against a unranked player, there is a much better chance he will lose than some other players, HAVE YOU NOT SEEN HIS RESULTS!!
