Fed slammed Ancic in '08. Ancic was all over the place back then and throwing one of his patened "Mario tantrums".
he's been out for the past 10 months with glandular fever, plus he missed another 6 months through it in 2007, plus he struggled at the start of 2008. The guy's had his career wrecked by it, he was a top 10 player when he got struck down - last year he almost retired to become a lawyer
and that Federer match came just after he'd beaten Verdasco 13-11 in 5th from two sets down in previous round i can imagine was a little bit fatigued
Honestly, Ancic has never been on my radar enough for me to know anything about it. The total sum of my knowledge about Ancic is that he was at a match in Wimbly 08 that I went to see.

well he was world junior number one at 16, beat Federer in straight sets at Wimbledon at 18, made Wimbledon semis at 20. Pretty outstanding pedigree as a youngster, shame form and injury have stopped him from kicking on and becoming a great player
Yes, Ancic was a great talent. It's a huge shame about the glandular fever which I believe can effect folk differently and can hang around to various extents for a long time.
As a senior he entered the top 30 at age 20 in July 2004 after his Wimbledon semi final ( where he virtually remained for the next 3 years ), the top 20 in March 2005 and the top 10 in June 2006 and spent many weeks in the top 10 with a CH of 7. I remember thinking he was going to be a great player for many years to come. It's very sad how things have gone.
It would be just tremendous for the guy if he can really work back up the rankings.

Dunno what's going on down Texas way: Bloomers appears to have withdrawn (no reason given on the updated DS) & was replaced by the unranked Yank LL, Chris Kwon, who promptly beat Maher by 4 & 0! Paul Bishop lost by 4 & 1.

[...]the Bishop does not get the kind of draw he might have been praying for:
It doesn't get much easier for him in the doubles, either! If perchance he & Chris Kwon (UNR) manage to negotiate their way past the likewise unranked Russo-Sierra Leonean pair, Evegeniy Belov & Sahr Timothy Kpulin, they'll almost certainly have to face the second seeds, Brugues Davi & Nicholas Monroe (ESP/USA WR 996)!
They got past Belov & Kpulin by 1 & 1 - then proceeded to lose to Brugues & Monroe by the same score!
Sounds like one of the over-rated youngsters that Steven warns us to be cautious of. Ancic has always played weakly in my seeing. He doesn't have what it takes. I invite him to show me different.

Who, Ancic? I wouldn't say he was an over-rated youngster when he's since made the top 10 and made a Wimbledon semi. I would say he was over-rated by anyone who expected him to be no. 1 or 2 in the world , but I don't remember many people thinking that. I think he could have hung around in the top 10 for a long time if he hadn't got ill.
