It's been a long time since I've had to say this, and I wish I didn't have to this week, but it's Bloomers or Bust for the GB men after Muzza's defeat ...

L32: Richard Bloomfield WR 490 beat Gregory Ouellette (USA) WR 466 by 7-6(1) 6-2
L16: Richard Bloomfield WR 490 v (Q) Bryan Koniecko (USA) WR 1236
Koniecko, who has been ranked as high as 651, shocked Timo Nieminen in R1, having beaten the Bishop 2 & 3 in qualifying, but Richard beat him 3 & 1 in USO qualifying in 2007.

Presumably his chances of beating Koniecko are greater than they would have been, had it been Nieminen on the other side of the net... aren't they?
Koniecko is Bloomers' doubles partner & they combined quite well to see off the Yank WCs, Efferding & Newman (UNR), yesterday by 6-2 7-6(2).
QF: Andrew Anderson & Phillip Simmonds (RSA/USA) (WR 1162) vs Richard Bloomfield & Bryan Koniecko (USA) (WR 2119)
Presumably the above is less of a tall order than it would have been, had not the top seeds, Arnau Brugues Davi & Victor Estrella (ESP/DOM - WR 789), capitulated to Anderson & Simmonds by 6-2 3-6 [7-10] yesterday. On the other hand ...
Good opening win for Bloomers and a pretty good chance of following that up with another one in the second round, so this could turn out to be a pretty useful event for him.
Bloomers is doing a good job of taking advantage of his draw opening up here. Easton took out the no. 1 seed in R2, can Bloomers take out another seed-basher?

Good on 'im! I'd like to think so, especially as Easton is another qualifier & not much more highly ranked than Koniecko. Then again... In fact, there's only one seed left in his half of the draw, the fifth, Andrey Kumantsov (RUS)!
Only one seeded pair left in the doubles, too, but as (bad) luck would have it, it's in the Bloomers/Koniecko half of the draw: the Romanian, Catalin-Ionut Gard, & his Russian mate, Artem Sitak!

B*gger! I was right to feel nervous: Easton won by 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 6-4! Close, but as ever when it's a Brit on the other side of the net, not close enough.

Unfortunately, it was "on the other hand": Bloomers & Koniecko lost by 3 & 5. Definitely not Richard's day yesterday...
