Good stuff. Elena will play top seed Shazza or (WC) Mattek-Sands (so barring freak injuries, that'll be Shazza then) in the second night match tomorrow, probably about 02.30 GMT, and Anne will play Sprem n/b 20.00 GMT.

Perfect. Great work by our 2 girls. Surprised that Anne is already playing at such a good level and that Bally is able to keep hers up for this long run.
Looks like Shazza is taking no prisoners and 2 games is the target for Elena to beat this week - that's how many games both Perry and Mattek won.
I'm wondering how long it has been since we last had two Brits in the QFs of an overseas WTA (or indeed any WTA event, or even two quarter-finalists in different WTA events in the same week) ... I'm guessing a couple of decade but perhaps the WTA experts on here can remind me if it was much more recent and I've just forgotten.

The best I can come up with for the last time we had two Brits in the QFs of a WTA event is Wellington 1992, where Monique Javer and Clare Wood met in the QFs (Wood having beaten Sara Gomer in R2) and Javer won before going out in the SFs.

Very impressed and slightly surprised by how quickly Anne has got back to seemingly close to her best. She obviously had, as she said, done a great deal of training and prep prior to her comeback and was already shaking off match rustiness after the Fed Cup week ( to get right back during that week was I think expecting too much, but let's not go there again ), was quite impressive last week and has stepped up a level again this week. I think she has a reasonaable chance of reaching the SF and thus defending her SF points from last year.
Bally's job a little tougher Be great though if she can at least feel she has given her best and if Shazza is just better so be it. She didn't produce her best vs Safina in the Aus Open, perhaps understandablty due to the occasion, and I feel she will want to step up on that performance at this next meeting with one of the "big girls".
Workmanlike performance by Bally must be starting to get tired but what a great opportunity to play Maria in the night match. She acquitted herself well against Kim and she is a much better player now. I have a feeling she will do herself justice tonight as opposed to her match against Safina and being tired might actually help her by not feeling as nervous. Great to see how her 'A' game matches up against an elite player. Whatever the result tonight she has had an outstanding start to the season and together with Anne who has hit top form there is so much to look forward to for the rest of the season.
