RE: Week 7 - WTA ($220K) - Memphis, USA Hard

Bally couldn't pull the rabbit out of the hat this time, so Sharapova takes it 6-2, 7-5. Seems like she put up a good fight and the score could have been even more in her favor, especially as she had a couple of ads on her own service in the first set that were not converted.

All in all, an excellent couple of weeks to be proud of!

Yes, a good fight and an excellent couple of weeks, but you can't help thinking she could have nicked that 2nd set!

Pity Elena couldn't at least have taken it to 3 sets.

But she has still had a great start to the year and a really good last two weeks in a row. She has now clearly been competitive with Sharapova, a Sharapova evidently in pretty good nick given she only lost 2 games to each of Perry and Mattek-Sands.

Much to be very satisfied with.

Time for a well earned rest.

The statistic of note for Elena is she unbeaten against players ranked below her, and not far off 50% on players ranked above her this year.

A fine start to the year.

Can't argue with the start of the year she's had.

I don't know much about the WTA rankings but is she close to getting in IW main draw? I notice in the week 10 entries thread she's still an alt.

Somehow I think someones going to tell me it's a 54 person main draw :)

Also, is IW the event the Williams sisters refuse to play or is it Miami? I'm pretty sure they don't play one of these events.

IW is the event the Williams' refuse to play, though I think it's a mandatory event now so I'm not sure how they get out of it.

The draw size is usually 128, though seeds have a first round bye, so Bally really should be ranked high enough to avoid qualies after this week, though I haven't investigated what the cut off point normally is/ when it is made.

Probabably because they are THE Williams Sisters. But I think the rule is if you do some promotional activity for the tour then you don't get fined or whatever, and of course they play that Billie Jean Cup Exhibition in Madison Square Garden.

Anyway, back to the Brits, we'll see about Bally getting in. Obviously it won't be based on her new ranking because I think the tournaments count rankings from 6 weeks before. Anne should get in though, should she choose to use her PR. Hopefully Anne's rank will lead her to play in more International events as I felt that she tried to play way too many 'Big girl' tour events and lost in a lot of first rounds, but we'll see.

What a great week so far. Bally will get to a career high of 65 and Anne will be at 120. Another win would take Anne back up to 107.

I hope Anne's clay form from last Warsaw continues because there are a lot of points to be made in the clay season for her. Don't know about Bally tho.

According to Seagull's entries thread Anne is in on a PR and Bally is the 7th alt.

The answer appears to be the 6 week rule whereas the men are on a 2/3 week entry.

I guess it works both ways depending on your situation. Think I prefer the mens entry week but you got to go with what you have.

With the Williams not playing that will put Bally up to 5th but still a tough ask to get direct.

Well done again Anne. This surely has to be the moment to make a main tour final. Here's hoping.
