South doesn't play a qualifier, she plays Arefyeva (261), and would then face Minella or a qualifier. On hard Minella should be beatable, and the other seed in the quarter is Irigoyen (224). This week is a lot easier than last because of Midland, so provided she can cope with Minella Mel could do well here.

After the Midland disappointments these were 3 great results because arguably on current form there could have been 3 losses instead.
The Mel match appears to have been drama packed with the Russian girl being given a third violation and thus a game penaltly at 6-6 in the final set.
Really pleased for Jo as after a promising start to the season she still hadn't gained any ranking points of note until now.
Great for Georgie as well to comeback after a sorry performance last week.

Yes a bit disappointing for Mel. Minella may have won a 25K already this year. but that was on clay as appear to be all her best results last year.

There did seem a good oportunity to win this match against an opponent who has never been top 200 ranked and indeed go further.

I get the impression from her twitter that she knows this only too well herself :

" lost today 3 and 5. am so close to playing very well but just didnt. this sport can be frustrating"
