All three of our entrants have to start against low seeds, which makes for a tough start, but may be the best time to play them in order to progress deeper in the draw. Oliver Golding came out on top in 3 sets against his Japanese opponent on clay last June, so should be confident of a rankings upset.
Jack should also be reasonably confident against a clay-court specialist, who Ollie trounced at the Canadian Open. Tom however has drawn a short straw. His opponent won the Coffee Bowl earlier this month, and it would require a major shock for Tom to progress.
R1
(11) Renzo Olivo (ARG) v Tom Allen (10) Guilherme Clezar (BRA) v Jack Carpenter Oliver Golding v (12) Yasutaka Uchiyama (JPN)
Ollie through reasonably comfortably 6-4 6-4 easier than the scoreline suggests but Jack suffered a disappointing defeat 6-2 6-4 only making a bit of a move late on.
Disappointing from Jack but encouraging from Ollie, who becomes the first Brit to win a match in a foreign grand slam since the 2008 US Open. He plays an Irishman with a modest record by grand slam standards and will be favourite to progress to the third round.
In doubles Ollie plays with Cedrick Commin , who was on the opposite side in the Junior Davis Cup semi whilst Tom and Jack will hope that it's third time lucky for their partnership, against a Korean pair
R1
(11) Renzo Olivo (ARG) v Tom Allen 1st match court 10
Tom does a complete turnaround, taking the second set 7-5, just as Ollie steps out onto Court 5 for his junior doubles first round match, paired with Cedrick Commin of France.
There's a real opportunity for Tom and Jack to reach the quarters here, as the 7th seeds pulled out, with the alternates losing to the scratch pairing which Tom and Jack face tonight. Dan Cox was the last Brit to make the quarters (with an Australian partner) at the 2008 US Open
