R1: David Rice & Sean Thornley WR 1711 defeated (WC) Gilad Ben Zvi & Saar Steele (ISR/ISR) WR 1769 by 2 & 3
QF: (1) Josh Goodall & Marcus Willis WR 543 vs Mikhail Fufygin & Vitali Reshetnikov (RUS/RUS) WR 1168
QF: David Rice & Sean Thornley WR 1711 vs Di Wu & Ze Zhang (CHN/CHN) WR 1232
* David's & Sean's Chinese opponents saw off another Chinese pair, Mao-Xin Gong & Zhe Li, the third seeds (WR 856), so will obviously be no slouches. I just hope Josh & Marcus have less of a battle agin the Russkies!
Biryukov is 17 and the junior world no. 50 (he hit a high of JWR 35 about a year ago) - he hasn't played many senior tournaments yet, so he's probably a fair bit better than his senior ranking suggests. His biggest senior win to date appears to have been against Artem Smirnov UKR WR 372, though Smirnov thrashed him 1 & 1 a week later. It's still shocking that Josh lost a set 6-1 to him, but that puts it a bit more into context and at least Josh eventually won!

Yes, a lot of the juniors you obviously can't just look at rankings. Clearly they may have not played many senior tournaments and some also make significant sudden unexpected improvements when some things just click.
Good week for Rice to reach the last eight and a shame for him to run into Josh who really should be winning this event.
Dropping down to 10K's is a good way to build up confidence after a disappointing end to 2009 for Josh and if he can get some cheap points here it could set him up for a return to the top 250 and beyond.
