RE: Week 4 - Futures F1 ($10K) - Eilat, Israel - hard

Doubles:

R1:  (1) Josh Goodall & Marcus Willis WR 543 defeated Germain Gigounon & Clément Reix (BEL/FRA) WR 1847 by 4-6 7-6(6) [12-10] smile  hmm

R1:  David Rice & Sean Thornley WR 1711 defeated (WC) Gilad Ben Zvi & Saar Steele (ISR/ISR) WR 1769 by 2 & 3 smile

QF:  (1) Josh Goodall & Marcus Willis WR 543 vs Mikhail Fufygin & Vitali Reshetnikov (RUS/RUS) WR 1168

QF:  David Rice & Sean Thornley WR 1711 vs Di Wu & Ze Zhang (CHN/CHN) WR 1232

*  David's & Sean's Chinese opponents saw off another Chinese pair, Mao-Xin Gong & Zhe Li, the third seeds (WR 856), so will obviously be no slouches.  I just hope Josh & Marcus have less of a battle agin the Russkies! pray.gif

Disturbing to see Josh losing a set 6-1 to a player outside the top 1000!

Spud, that was the reason for my hmm !

Biryukov is 17 and the junior world no. 50 (he hit a high of JWR 35 about a year ago) - he hasn't played many senior tournaments yet, so he's probably a fair bit better than his senior ranking suggests. His biggest senior win to date appears to have been against Artem Smirnov UKR WR 372, though Smirnov thrashed him 1 & 1 a week later. It's still shocking that Josh lost a set 6-1 to him, but that puts it a bit more into context and at least Josh eventually won!

Yes, a lot of the juniors you obviously can't just look at rankings.  Clearly they may have not played many senior tournaments and some also make significant sudden unexpected improvements when some things just click.

At least Josh is through  smile

L16: (1) Josh Goodall WR 309 def. (Q) Arsenije Zlatanevic (SRB) WR 887 by 6-2, 6-3
L16: (8) David Rice WR 525 def. (WC) Almog Mashiach (ISR) WR 880 by 6-2, 6-4

QF: (1) Josh Goodall WR 309 vs. (8) David Rice WR 525

So we have a guranteed semi-finalist then, who does everyone think or want to win?

I don't have a favourite who I want to win, but i'd say Goodall will probably edge this one

QF:  (1) Josh Goodall WR 309 defeated (8) David Rice WR 525 by 6-1 7-6(3)

SF:  (1) Josh Goodall WR 309 vs (3) Andrej Martin (SVK) WR 419

Good week for Rice to reach the last eight and a shame for him to run into Josh who really should be winning this event.

Dropping down to 10K's is a good way to build up confidence after a disappointing end to 2009 for Josh and if he can get some cheap points here it could set him up for a return to the top 250 and beyond.

SF: (1) Josh Goodall WR 309 lost to (3) Andrej Martin (SVK) WR 419 by 6-7(3) 6-1 6-3 bleh

Particularly frustrating because the other finalist is ranked 575.

Just 6, the same as winning R1 in a 35K+H Challenger.
