RE: Week 2 - Australian Open men's qualifying

Evo broken again, Ventura to serve for the match.

GSM Ventura 6-1 6-2 in just 50 mins. Evo was never really in the match and didn't create a single bp opportunity. You aren't going to win many matches with 3 winners (the stats here do look a little more beliveable) and just 37% first serve.

Our three all lost to people who went on to qualify.

Pity we couldn't have got one guy through to the MD, any more would have been exceptional in my view.

Rankings generaly do not lie that much and as I said earlier I would dispute any theory that our guys are really very much better than their rankings suggest.  I wish it was otherwise.

They like many players around them in the rankings can play at times better than these ranking positions suggest, but it is all about consistency and overall results.

As wolf said earlier that is not to have a go at these three guys who are our best players after Andy and good enough to have a chance at qualifying, it is to bemoan the continued overall state of British men's tennis.

A very disapointing performance from Dan, and he does seem to have these matches where he just can't seem to get into it at all.

This looks like the final lot to me, and I saw it before posting:

However, I see that there are no scores shown for the FQR so maybe they just had a crystal ball!

Yes, see my edit which crossed with your post. What a daft thing for them to do!

I thought they must have had a very busy day playing two matches each. . .

From the 5live tennis feed:

An unimpressed Paul Annacone watched Evans courtside. Has Evans blown his Davis Cup place? Decent effort from Robson v Kraijeck but lost 4&6
about 8 hours ago from web

...then when broken again for 4-2 he smacked a ball at an unused TV camera on gantry. Missed. Broken for 3rd time to lose 6-1 6-2.
about 9 hours ago from Echofon

Dan Evans meltdown on court 8. Doublefaulted at 2-2 0-15 second set, chucked racket, and didn't win another point for two games...

looks like Dan lost his cool, odd that i dont remember him doing that in DC.

Also apparently the abuse Boggo received was pretty intense throughout the whole match.

and Wardy was cheated big time on some of the line calls.

funny old time in Oz.

It should not come as much of a surprise. It has happened before. Dan seems to have a difficult game for opponents to get a grip with, but once they do Dan cannot change things round. There is no plan B if plan A fails. We should not forget Ventura is a good experienced player and I did not expect Evans to win this one. At least he showed some fire by these accounts and just didn't give in meekly.

I don't think Davis Cup selection matters that much
at this stage. It can raise a player's profile so long as they do something if they get the chance to play. Moving up the rankings and getting into the big money spinning tournaments will be far more important this season.

Disappointing that none of the Brits could get into the final round of qualifying but then they were all against higher ranked player so perhaps we shouldn't have expected too much from the matches.

Seems like the situations didn't help the Brits either with Boggo having everyone against him and so on and that Brits have never done well in Australia but it was a decent chance to get a qualifier though.

Disappointing for Evans to be beaten so easily against Ventura and to lose his cool in the way he did and it has to be something he needs to cut out but it has been a promising to the season for the Brits.
