Good to see all the guys get their wins but with the draws that they had, it would have been disappointing had they not reached the second round.
Looks like the usual roller coaster ride from Boggo and perhaps against a better player he would have been made to pay for dropping serve when serving for sets, but with it being his first match of the year it perhaps can be excused. Would have to step up a level for his match with Ilhan but it is one that he is capable of winning.
Evo took his time to get going but once he did he cruised through. Ventura will be a tough opponent but he has beaten better players in the past and will be another good test as to where he is at the moment.
Ward had the easiest win on day one but still has the hardest draw to overcome, but can take out Marchenko if he keep playing well.
Not unreasonable to say that all three will make the final round but I would expect at least one of them probably to slip to defeat.
Simple mistakes just seem to get pounced upon around here nowadays, no room to breath!
Back to the tennis, just seen two great results for Irish tennis today, Louk Sorensen beating Benjamin Ballert 7-6(6) 6-3 and Conor Niland knocking out Henri Kontinen (!) 6-4 6-4.
If we face them in the next round of the DC it could be very, very interesting.
With Evo's win, has he now got a new career high ranking?
Very unlikely, especially since the Aussie Open qualifying points will not be added until after the Aussie Open, though I am not following all the relevant nearby ranking players' wins and losses.
Just on rankings, this week's Auckland qualifying 12 points will take him to 179 points in the 18/01 rankings which I agree Streven's top 25 table prediction of a 254 ranking, purely based on where 179 points would place you this week.
Now, he gets 8 points towards the post Aussie Open rankings at 01/02 from winning his first qualifying round, but to counter that he is due to drop 8 points at 01/02 from GB Future performances last year. So no gain yet there.
An advance to the FQR and a 14 point total would take him to 185 points and quite possibly take him past his career high ranking of 248. though still by no means certain and dependant on others.
Might as well just qualify just to make sure

True, maybe we should call a truce - we don't want to put other people off posting because they think they're going to get picked up on every little mistake - to a non-regular user, it might not always be obvious that it's just done in fun to people we've known on here for a while.
Count: pick 'em - not quite sure how I'm going to manage it but yes, there is going to be one.
