Excellent win. If he follows it up with another one over one or other of the two French clay-courters, Oger (WR 412) or Renard (Q/WR 647), in the QF, it may be that he's finally at least starting to turn the corner.
An excellent result from Eaton of course. I wonder if we are seeing the same style of play at the start of 2010 for Chris or is he started to be more patient in points. Maybe trying to work the point a bit more before either going for the winner or coming into the net.
I couldn't help noticing as I added those results to the GB Top 25 table that there's a nice block of blue there now. Of the 10 Brits below Muzza, GB nos 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 & 11 have all won matches in the last 24 hours, GB nos. 7 & 9 are due to play tonight and only the GB no. 10 (Bloomers) had already gone out!
Chris's win is the only rankings upset among that lot, of course. He had those Wimbledon 2008 points to be dropped hanging over him for the first half of last year, I wonder if he's going to quietly make some progress this year ...

Crackin' final set! Breakthrough came at 6-5 when Lugassy broke to win the match. Morgan has a booming first serve and a huge forehand but the groundstrokes were a little erratic at times. Some more matchplay though should help with the consistency!
So so close. A cogent effort from Morgan though, it does look like his game is well suited to the senior game. And I would much rather see a player than has the power to tame than one that is consistent yet has no major weapons, especially at Morgan's age.
Any further details on Morgan's game Stuart? How's his backhand? And thanks for the continued updates - will you be there for the remainder?
The prayers must be working again! That - in theory at least - is good news for Chris Eaton: Alexandre Renard's a qualifier & a clay-courter. He's also ranked below Chris. Then again...
Shame George got so close, but couldn't quite pull it off - but with any luck, he'll learn from the experience.
Managed to take in some of the play today. I thought Marsalek played very well and was unlucky the result didn't reward his efforts. Mertens won the event last October but does not like playing serve and vollyers. Chris edged him out in 2 tie breaks but it was hit or miss stuff. Chris was coming in a lot and Mertens got more and more frustrated he could not play his usual game. But to rely on frustrating opponents with serve and volley to get up the rankings is a dangerous business these days. George Morgan looks a really good prospect. First time I have seen him play. He has very solid and powerful groundstrokes and with a bit more experience will go a long way. Sorry to hear he was edged out as I had to leave after the first set which he won on a tie break after having been a break up. Strangest match of the day has to be Josh's win over Mcgee. Looking jaded and out of sorts for most of the first 2 sets, Josh finally remembered how to play tennis in the second set tie break. He then bagled the guy in the third, to win a match which looked beyond him for most of it. I did think he is carrying too much weight (who has ate all the mince pies then?) and needs to get a bit fitter for the season ahead. There is no denying he has the talent if only he could add the fitness and consistency. Finally we did not see much of Baker today, but he remains the man to beat in this tournament. He brings in a lot of local support in what is his own back yard. Tomorrow he faces Timo Nieminen who had a very good win over Ignatik today and seems to be on a bit of a role. Could be a difficult match.
