Week 2- ATP 250- Heineken Open, Auckland

Daniel Evans has popped up in qualifying here and is 5th seed in a relatively poor qualifying field.

Evans has a bye in the first round and in the 2nd round plays 20 year old, Marcus Daniell (wr 766)from New Zealand. Should realistically pick up 6 points from this

In the final qualifying round he will play Tsung Hua Yang or 4th seed Jan Minar (wr 244) Who lost to Evans in the final of Jersey 6-2,6-3 last year.

So good chance for Evans to pick up 12 points and to qualify for the tournament.

Also what's the furthest Evans can reach without having to withdraw for Australian Open Qualies?

WOW I would expect it would be when the draw for qaulifying is made, maybe he would tank if needed, or maybe he thinks if he can win a match in the main draw it would be worth missing the open

Draw is made on Tuesday, so you would think he has to get to the 2nd round if to play aus, which would not be too bad

QR2: (q5) Dan Evans WR 262 beat Marcus Daniell (NZL) WR 766 by 2 & 4 smile.gif - 6 points in the bag

FQR: (q5) Dan Evans WR 262 v (WC) Tsung-Hua Yang (TPE) WR 341 - 22.00 GMT

18-year-old Yang won a Future at the start of last year then reached four more Futures Finals, all in Asia, losing them all. He beat Minar in 3 set today. Evo's got to be looking at this as a big chance to pick up some more points.

Yes, good chance of quitea few more points here and if he gets through to the MD has a 50% chance of meeting another qualifier.  Other options are Montanes and Greul.

Was Yang not junior No1 when Evans couldn't even make the top 10?

He Won RG Juniors beating Jerzy JANOWICZ in the final.

I'd make Yang strong favourite and I'll be absolutely delighted if Evo can win this

So he was - he also reached the US Open junior Final in 2008, losing in straight sets to Dimitrov and the AO junior Final, losing in straight sets to Tomic.

He is 6-1 against Brits at senior level, including a 1 & 3 win against Dr No last year and 3-set wins against both Eaton and Slabba in the 2008 New Delhi Challenger. The only Brit ver to have beaten him is, believe it or not, Fitzy, who beat him 6-3 2-6 6-1 in qualifying for the Delhi Future in 2007, though Yang got his revenge a couple of days later when he got a LL place, drew Fitzy again and thrashed him 1 & 2!

Evo still has a better record at senior level though, so I stick by my "Evo's got to be looking at this as a big chance to pick up some more points" comment, while accepting that he could have a very tough match on his hands.

I thought Yang was supposed to be a bit of a hotshot.
This could be another Broady Krunic affair.

Just my thoughts
