SF (1) Anna Fitzpatrick beat (4) Manisha Foster 6-4 6-1 (3) Jessica Ren beat (2) Sam Vickers 6-2 7-6(5)
Final (1) Anna Fitzpatrick beat (3) Jessica Ren 6-4 6-4
The quarters were one sided apart from a spirited second set effort from the local girl Southall.
Wasn't all that impressed with Fitzy, unfortunately injury have just halted her potential development. Her groundstrokes weren't very fluid and she sprayed it about a bit. In the other semi Vickers just couldn't get past the brick wall that was Ren.
To be fair to Anna, she must be playing constantly in the fear of mis-stepping and busting her foot - can't be easy psychologically to step onto court feeling so vulnerable. It took her plenty of time to get back into it last year, and she was really getting good results before 'relapsing', so hopefully you were observing a similar stage in her progression...
Be interesting to see how Fitzy fares against Cav in the final tomorrow on the clay...she beat Vickers easily today, suggesting she's in sufficient form to bag a few 10k points at present.
Why is Cav playing in these tournaments ? A bit ridiculous if you ask me. I know this is an exaggeration but its like David Beckham playing for his local team on a Sunday morning.
Im equally confused, unless she works these ''practise matches'' round a near-full weeks training and really just experiments what shes learned in a match situation.
Even so, she needs to get more experience at a decent level and maybe get back to winning titles.
With the amount of money at the LTA's disposal, our top 200 players should not need national events to stay afloat.
I suggest the reason should surely be to help her develop as a player, perhaps to keep her match fitness up etc. I thought she was driving out to a 25k though?
Development/ match practice sounds likely, and this tournament on clay is probably a good idea since she is playing another 25K on clay next week, and probs wants to do a little better than in the Belgium 25K clay event. Here's hoping she's now comfy on the dirt and ready to rip up the main draw in Brescia/ go deep.
True, getting her body used to sliding around on the dirt in best of 3 set matches is a good shout. Its free practise that she gets a bit of pockey money for taking. Im sure she can treat herself to some delicious italian ice cream as a consequence :)
