RE: Week 2 - Australian Open Qualifying

That was a huge struggle but I do like the way she scrapped to the victory. Well down on service power meant she was always struggling to hold serve. Will have to play much better tomorrow and hopefully she won't be too physically or mentally tired.

oh dear tie break, if Cav was tight trying to serve it out I dread to think how she must be feeling now.

4 UEs from Naomi as she fails to serve out the set for the 2nd time.

Impressive tiebreak from Naomi.

Match stats are weird. Panova won the opening set serving 43%, then improved her first serve percentage to 62% but struggled to win points on her first serve. Naomi's points won on 2nd serve improved in the 2nd set.

Naomi holds at the start of the 3rd set 1-0*

*1-1

2-1* comfortable hold for Cavaday, error count much lower so far this set

*2-2 no impact

3-2* solid hold apart from a df. Both players' first serve totally dominant this set

*3-3 Panova holds to love

4-3* pattern continues

0-30 0-40 Naomi's big chance. She breaks for *5-3

15-0 30-0 40-0 40-15 40-30 Naomi wins

3-6 7-6(3) 6-3

Super effort from Naomi. Took three match points to finish it but excellent serving in that final set and crushed Panova's serve when the chance arose, assisted by a number of ues.

From the ACE live updates:

Cav: (apparently very happy after today's result, as well she might be! smile.gif)

"Wickmayer is a bit of a different draw but everyone knew that she was in the draw,' she says. 'She only came through in three sets today so shes definitely vulnerable. If were here I definitely wouldnt want to be in quallies and I wouldnt want to be coming out here against somebody who has caused me problems in the past, which I have done. Im a lefty, Im going to make it awkward for her and Ive got no pressure, whereas shes got piles of pressure on her. Actually, I think its a fantastic draw, absolutely fantastic. Im going to give it my best shot."

Robbo:

"I can't remember the last time I played like that. It was really windy, and I obviously didn't play my best tennis, but I hung in there and stayed consistent."

Always look at the results with trepidation after a night of not watching any live scoring. Disappointed for Mel - was hoping she could have a good start to her year but excellent news for Naomi and Laura. This first win is so important for points and confidence plus Laura delivered on her WC. Great effort by both.

Well Done Cav and Laura, when i went o sleep at 2 i feared the worst so a great thing to wake up to.

If Laura is ready physicallty and mentally i fancy her to beat Krajicek who is a shadow of the player that reached the top 30
