Wow, week 1 and we have 2 players winning 3 Q matches to enter the MD of tour events! Could be a great year this :)

Brilliant from Wardy, my pessimism for him in the predictions thread now looks considerably misplaced.

He has drawn Granollers in the main draw, and the match is first on court at 9:30 am GMT tomorrow.

Great win for Ward, and winnable 1st round match for him

Great stuff.   I had a feeling he was going to win that one but not really as seemingly straightforwardly as that.

R1 :  James WARD  WR  272   vs   Marcel  GRANOLLERS  ( ESP )   WR 91

Decent draw, although clearly quite a step up.  Hey, only Cilic or Kunitsyn awaiting in R2  smile

Well Done Wardy! I really didn't expect him to do so well this week, Glad he's come back with a BANG! How many points in the bag is that now?

That's 12 ranking points and 3,885 dollars in the bag. Also should he win, he'd play Cilic as he saw off Kunitysn to answer Indiana's question.

Arguablly i reckon it's the best draw Ward could have got out of the qualifiers, as although Granollers is higher ranked than the others, he is defending semi final points here, and should he lose, he would take a nose dive down the rankings

Great stuff from James. I hope he can get that MD scalp.

Is he likely to make the Aus open quallies cut-off?

Great start to the year for James and whatever he was doing in the off-season has paid off in a big way in the opening week of the season with some very good wins, especially against Ilhan.

Granollers didn't have a great year at all in 2009 and his Chennai result was one of his few really good efforts (but he didn't beat anyone in the top 100 that week) so is not the worst draw to get, and given that he has a similar kind of game to James, hopefully it gives him a half-decent chance of an upset.

Either way though, a great start to 2010 for James.
