Disappointing, but Katie did appear to fight well and certainly seems much of the problem was in the service area which hopefully she can put more work in and sort out some of the issues. First match into the season I wouldn't be over despondent.
1st serves in 60%, Aces 0, DFs 8
1st service points, 15 / 28 ( 54% ), 2nd service points 6 / 19 ( 32% ), so double faulted on 8 out of 19 second serves, not good !
BPs won 3 / 11 as against 6 / 7 so Katie won 4 / 18 BPs for or against her which was clearly a big factor. Hopefully that was due more to her opponent's good play at such important moments than anything else though no doubt she missed some chances.
Total service points won 21 / 47 ( 45% ) Total return points won 40 / 90 ( 44% ) Total points 61 / 137 ( 45% )
Saw Bally's match and she never seemed in too much danger of losing. Got there just as she got broken back for 2 all but for most of the first set she just made too many errors. Most points were either winners or UEs from Bally, she won a great point to break back for 4-5 but then tamely lost her serve and the set in the next game. Gradually as the match went on she was getting more and more solid, cutting out the errors and never looked back once she finally broke through in the 2nd set. The hold from 0-40 in her first service game of the 3rd set seemed to break Fichman and it turned out pretty comfortable in the end.
Each changeover Fichman was reading from a little book. I was thinking it might be an NFL style play-book, but seeing as they can call their coaches on whenever they want to who knows what was in it. Bally was very pumped up for most of the match and she should be able to qualify.
Also watched the start of Katie's match and she seemed to start very slowly, with a couple of DFs to get broken in her first service game. I had to leave just as she broke back after a long game for 2-1 in the first set to go and play paintball so got some pretty nice bruises right now.
Great to see Bally shaking off the rustiness. Shame for Katie, but as everyone has already said the problems seem to be in the serve which can hopefully be rectified and having had some time on court today come next week she should be in better form.
Also, although this is of small comfort to Katie, at least her first match of the season didn't go like Alexandra Panova's, the Russian was double-bageled by Dubois....
Yeah Katie could of turned the match with better break point conversions, had plenty of chances.
But the points on offer in qualies at these events are worthless, so hopefully a bit of rustiness shaken off, with a better display in Sydney to put her into good shape for Melbourne.
A better start than yesterday, breaks in the first game, 4 good first serves to take the 2nd game to love, saves 2 break points in her 2nd service game and then breaks again.
Bally *4-1
