Final (1) Daniel Cox beat Scott Whitbread 6-1 6-2
I've just managed to find time to write a small report from Friday when I went.
Scott Whitbread was obviously the surprise of the day, dominating Illy before he retired with what he said was shoulder/neck injuries. He then came from a break down in the first set to beat the Saffa Coertzen, whose backhand let him down dramatically. Whitbread has a good all-round game, and an excellent temperment.
They've found out Coertzen has a ranking and will give him a seeding next week.
Cox was clearly the class act of the field though, hitting his groundstrokes hard and true.
The question is would he want one? He retired five years ago at 24 still ranked close to the top 250. Surely he is just playing these for fun? Mind you the competitive fire can start to burn after a few wins.
Funny thing i spoke to Mark at notts and asked him why he had not entered the futures , He said he would have but he wasnt there at the weekend to sign in. To get back playing again would need funding . Watch a little of one of his matches and he was totally different class.
