Bally/ Sarah not a great partnership so far 0-2. Surely they can't lose this.

From twitter, Anne can't play until the next round because of the protected rankings rules

How is that worked out, I wonder? In the WTA Tour rules, it's says the 6 month period starts on the last day of the tournament in which the player got injured. The Bank of the West Classic finished on 2 August and 6 months from then is 2 Feb, i.e. yesterday. The rule says that "The earliest a player may return to competition is in a match scheduled during the same calendar week in which the six-month period expires."

That implies that she can play any time this week, and even if I counted it wrong somehow, that she can either play any day this week or not at all.

Bally/Sarah win 6-3 6-2

GBR 3 BIH 0

Azarenka retires apparently so Austria upset Belarus 2-0

Sarah/Bally won 6-3 6-2

Bammer won the second set 6-4 against Azarenka and is 2-0 up in the decider.

Edit: Great news if Azrenka retired, I've literally just come back after going away so I had no idea.

Bally/Sarah won 6-3 6-2 GBR 3-0

Azarenka has to retire to leave Austria 2-0 ahead.
We now want somehow for Belarus to win the doubles.

Whether that happens or not, GB could hardly have asked for a better first day. biggrin

Tomorrow's tie with AUT looks like being the big tie of the group after all!

Belarus are 4-0 up inthe 1st set, so maybe the Austrians have let their better players go and get some sleep so they're ready for the crunch matches against us tomorrow. If they beat us, they're basically through so they may think that's more importance than making sure they maximise the number of rubbers they win just in case the big three teams all win two ties.

With the tie not starting until 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon thats a risky strategy to take.

Belarus won, so a 3-0 win tomorrow isn't as vital as it could have been. (but a win is needed though, of course)

Belarus win the doubles to seal the perfect day.
Now we just need to beat the Austrians to have a better than 50/50 chance of progressing further.
Will Azarenka play anymore this week ?

I'm not sure, I would doubt it to be fair, you know what some of these players are like.

According to the LTA feed, Azarenka had a sore throat. You don't suppose that because she was unable to screech she was unable to play properly and had to retire???
