Week 50 - British Tour Masters - Nottingham

Holly Richards lines up here as the top seed but Jessica Ren will look to build on recent good form.

I presume Holly Richards isn't in full time training? She doesn't seem to have ever made a proper stab at the tour. I often wonder how people like Liz Thomas etc who don't play a full schedule cope with combining training, jobs and breaks for tournaments, as presumably they must work as well? Anyone got any insights on the lifestyle of these kinds of players?

Holly played 9 tournaments in the last 12 months, all in the UK. Liz played 21, all in Europe. She played at least one in every month apart from August and December.

OK, didn't check that...even so, you wouldn't think she'd make enough to survive on with the results she gets, and surely no employer would allow her so much time off - so how do people like her manage?

I'd be very surprised if she didn't have another form of income coming in, unless she has very rich parents or massive support from the LTA it surely just wouldn't be financially viable.

Andrew Fitzpatrick who sometimes posts on here sometimes says he does a bit of part time modelling.

Final
(4) Jessica Ren beat Ruth Seaborne 6-3 5-7 6-0

After a pedestrian first set some good quality came through in the second set. Seaborne held after a very long 9th game saving a few break points and then broke from nowhere in the 12th game.

The third set Seaborne was broken to love first game and there was token resistance from then in, it took Ren about 15 minutes to wrap it up.

Ren was having problems with her backhand but was the better player, but nothing in her game to suggest she will have a massive impact in the senior game. Seaborne was tenacious and had a decent all-round game which hopefully will see her climb onto the ranking board next year.

Jess will get stronger as she gets older and hopefully a more powerful game will develop.
