Preview of Week 47-50 Junior tournaments

Although week 46 is a thin one for British juniors the following four weeks see all of our 1992-94 boys & girls who are ranked top 300 (except Laura Robson and Stefan Sterland-Markovic) down for some of the prestigious North American tournaments.

The first event is the Grade 1 Copa Yucutan in Mexico, which Heather Watson won last year. Heather is not defending her title, but World number 1 Kristina Mladenovic is surprisingly scheduled to play here.

This tournament provides the best opportunity for progression of the three under 18 events, with the cut being around 300. Natalie Beazant, Elisha Gabb, Daneika Borthwick, Jessica & Jennifer Ren, Francesca Stephenson and Joanna Henderson should be in the girls main draw.

Oliver Golding, James Marsalek, Richard Gabb, Tom Farquharson, Ashley Hewitt, Andrew Bettles, Lewis Burton and Liam Broady have all made the cut for the boys main draw.

The second week is the Eddie Herr, with tournaments at under 12, 14, 16 and 18. The cut is much higher, so currently only Heather, Olly, Jack Carpenter and Tom Allen are guaranteed to be in the under 18 main draws. There is a lot of interest in the other events, with all our top ranked under 14s present except Beth Askew. The following link gives the full list of participants, regularly updated.

The next week sees the Orange Bowl under 18 and under 16 events with entries clickable for each event here (very similar entry list and cut to the Eddie Herr)

Finally the Junior Orange Bowl takes place from the 17th to 23rd of December for the under 14s and under 12s.

Mladenovic does seem to have a hectic schedule.

comon Golding, in january he's surely going to be right up there in the rankings when the 1991's drop out

Olly would be ranked 47 if the 1991 boys dropped out now, so one good tournament out of the three should secure him a top 50 place come January 1. He has probably already done enough (just) to make the Australian Open, based on previous cut-offs.

James Marsalek is now top of the qualifying list, so should make it 4 in the Eddie Herr main draw. Natalie Beazant is only 4 off a place in the girls draw.

Lucy Brown and Eleanor Dean both withdrew from the Eddie Herr today. I assume that Lucy picked up an injury in Thailand, as she was also originally down for the Copa Yucutan, before pulling out about 10 days ago. She is at least still on the Orange Bowl list at the moment.

I wonder whether Lucy has made the trip.
