Playing on astroturf... I remember just how fun that used to be. I'm sure the only way to win on astro is to serve and volley on everything as at least that way you don't have to bother with the incredibly low bounce that makes it very difficult to hit a groundstroke.
At my club we play on astroturf, but two different types of astroturf!
On one side of the clubhouse we have four sandy courts which are fairly high bouncing and quite slow.
On the other side are two courts we use for club matches which have no sand on them and just don't bounce and zip through low (although it's not unknown after a serve for the ball to bounce up off the service line and take your head off). Basically if you're consistently landing your first serve in you really shouldn't be broken. I like these courts better because it encourages proper serve and volley doubles tennis, and also it takes about a set for opposition players to get used to it!!
