When Dan is good, he's very very good. But when he is bad, he is AAAARGH! I think he needs to have a Plan B if Plan A isn't working. At the moment if things go pear shaped they just continue to go pear shaped. He doesn't seem to be able to change his game around much.
I heard it said last week that he is a difficult player to read. Once someone begins to read his game, he is in trouble! If his opponent is allowed to start dominating the rallies he wins few points. He was being out powered by Mertens last week, but the mistakes came when the ball bounced either too low or too high (head height). So it is also about his ability to deal with awkward balls. Dan is young and will keep improving. Then there should be fewer embarrassing scorelines!
This lad needs a boot up the arse to clear out any trapped stools-hence his lack of movement about the court! Perhaps a switch to doubles might be best?

The semi-finals of the $15k AEGON Pro-Series Mens singles in Cardiff were played today with British interest in both ties.
Marcus Willis and Dan Evans both suffered defeat in their clashes with Yannick Mertens (BEL) and Henri Kontinen (FIN) respectively.
Willis, conqueror of the tournament No.3 seed Uladzimir Ignatik (BLR) earlier in the week, lost in a close match with No.2 seed Mertens.
Having gone a break down in the second game of the first set, Willis was unable to recover as the set went with serve, 3-6. In the second set, Mertens broke serve in the first game and held serve in the second game before the Briton raced back into a 3-2 lead.
However the No.2 seed fought back to break back and eventually win the set 6-4 and the match 6-3, 6-4.
There was also disappointment in the other semi-final as Evans was unable to overcome Kontinen. After impressing throughout the week, only conceding one set en route to the semi-final, the British No.5 was defeated 1-6, 0-6.
Meanwhile in the doubles event, the British pairing of Alexander Slabinsky and Tim Bradshaw were defeated 6-4 7-6(3) in a close match with the Irish pair of James McGee and Barry King.
In a final clash between the tournament No.2 and 3 seeds, it was McGee and King who prevailed after an impressive recent period for the British pairing which has seen them reach the final in Cardiff and the semi-finals at the $15k event in Glasgow.

Possibly, but with the points system the way it is now, there's no way it makes sense to tank a semi (even a Futures semi) just to make sign-in for a Challenger. Of course, if he started out really badly and decided he was certain to lose, then maybe he would want to make sure he got to Eckental, but a player as good as Evo shouldn't be deciding he's certain to lose at any point in any match, especially not at Futures level!
Who knows what the real reason might have been though ...

Don't care what the reason was for Dan's result. It was dire! Good effort from Marcus in his SF and I'd hoped for more from the doubles. Still, owt's better than nowt.
It seems a bit unlikely that the 12th Alt for a Challenger could end up as a DA, but he did enter and you're right, the top seed in qualifying (Goffin) was one place below him on the original entry list! http://www.mgn-atp.de/teilnehmer.htm
