The penultimate top tier junior event of the year sees a relatively weak field, especially in the Boys event, where players outside the top 100 are seeded. With the majority of our top boys playing Spanish Futures it falls to 4th ranked 1993 boy Robert Carter to maintain interest, and he is fortunate to draw a local wildcard.
We have taken a strong contingent of 1993 girls to the far east for this event and a subsequent Grade 2, but they have been less fortunate, with 3 drawing seeds.
Boys R1 (L64)
(WC) Yoshihito Nishioka (JPN) v Robert Carter (GBR)
Girls R1 (L64)
Hao-Ching Chan (TPE) v Lucy Brown (GBR) Daneika Borthwick (GBR) v (14) Ting-Fei Juan (TPE) Amy Askew (GBR) v (10) Sachei Ishizu (JPN) Elisha Gabb (GBR) v Yuki Ito (JPN) Francesca Stephenson (GBR) v (12) Emi Mutaguchi (JPN) Laura Deigman (GBR) v Hua-Chen Lee (TPE)
Matches again followed the rankings, with just one of the 32 seeds falling - to the player who now stands between Robert Carter and an unexpected place in round 3.
The doubles first round disappointingly resulted in defeats for Lucy/Fran and Elisha/Amy against lower ranked local players, but Daneika and her American partner (Noel Scott) survived. They have the daunting prospect of top seeds Mladenovic/Babos next.
