Quite a lot to be aiming for 8 matches on some courts, although I have seen it elsewhere. Actually there were more somewhere recently I recall and it was close to a midnight experience ( brought your sleeping bag, Stuart ? ) .
That type of things tends to happen at indoor events where the arenas are built solely for the tournament and they only tend to have two (and one maybe being just a practice court or a 'doubles court'.
However the LTA bring this on themselves by putting qualifying starting on Sunday and Monday for the men and women respectively. This then doesn't allow them to spread the first round over two or three days.
Reeltime from AM.com went yesterday and provided this very concise summary:
"today was my first day at a pro tennis tourney. Learned a few things about some of our players...
Grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory is not just something that happens at the top level of tennis for Brits! Dominic Inglot hits the ball hard... very hard. Jade Curtis is tiny, but very good! And you shouldn't leave when the 2nd seed is demolishing a british player... he might come back!"
Good to see Bloomers and Rice record the upset wins and Evo to continue his march through the tournament but a shame not to see any of the other Brits come through with Willis being edged out in a very close match and Cox and Inglot not being able to hold on to the one set advantage.
Would expect Evans to get the win today and hopefully Bloomers and/or Rice could join him in the last four.
