Oh my word - that's just fantastic, absolutely over the moon! And surely that makes Arvidsson look beatable! Keep it up Lisa, and there'll be lots of WCs coming your way, I should think...
I even really like the score, somehow. Great start with clearly won first set, brought back level by an equally comfortable second set, and then hangs in there and wins a third set tie break against a top 200 player. On the face of it, that shows a real fighting performance as well.
As someone here wondered recently even before this : " I wonder what's clicked". Something sure has
Congratulations to Lisa, who has confirmed the good impression she made on me at Shrewsbury. Lisa was our top ranked 1991 girl in the middle of last year (ahead of Hannah and Steph) so it's not a complete surprise.
Here's a report of the doubles from the local paper:
Playing together for the first time, Robson and Watson clicked straightaway, taking the first set 6-2. The second was more of a struggle, but they eventually took it 8-6 on the tie-break.
Robson looked the best player on the court and won all five of her service games. That helped the 15-year-old stand out in a first set that saw four breaks.
It wasn't until game six that Borwell or South held serve and by then they were 4-2 down.
Watson, showing no fatigue from her three-set singles match a few hours earlier, held for 5-2. Having tucked away a string of nice volleys at the net, it was fitting that the 17-year-old from Guernsey should win the first set in that fashion, albeit with the help of the net cord.
Borwell and South made a stronger start to the second set, breaking Watson and taking a 3-1 lead. The break-back came in the sixth game, off Borwell's serve, and from then on it went with serve to the tie-break.
A third set looked in the offing as the older pair, with a combined 22 years greater than their opponents, took a 4-1 and then 5-2 lead. But Robson and Watson won six of the next seven points to take the match 6-2, 7-6(6).
