RE: Week 38 - ITF ($75K) - Shrewsbury, Hard

Well none of the girls that got wild cards here won a match so will they get a second one in three weeks? I doubt it.

I would imagine three of the wild cards would go to (assuming Jade gets in as DA) Tara, Lisa and Heather. Other than that there is not a lot of choice, maybe Fitzy?

You might be right if the LTA decide to spread the wild cards around. We will see.

I would fully anticipate Lisa getting a main draw WC, deservedly on her perfomances here and clearly one should go to Heather.

Bally gave Lisa a lot of credit in her LTA interview saying: "I think what really surprised me was how well she started and I really had to up may game. I was waiting for her to fall behind which she didn't and I had to stay consistent and play a good game."

She amusingly elaborated on the psychological ploys she uses against younger Brits: "With players like Lisa it's hard to keep them down so I did try giving her a few looks and glares which you have to do as otherwise if you give them any opportunity they're going to take it, so I felt like I did that well.

I think Bally and Katie have 50-50 matches in the Quarters, but I fear that Flipper will mess Mel around with her slicing and net play.

I'm going again tomorrow, providing I don't get lost on the way there.

Willing to provide updates to anyone who wants to recieve them.

It was an excellent performance from Lisa this week to qualify and win a main draw match. Granted, she was playing a wild card in Steph but she has every chance of getting a MD wildcard IMO. Something of a slap in the face if she isn't rewarded for her wins at this level.

Can anybody update on here for us Brits abroad? Very keen to hear how Bally and Katie get on...

Parra-Santonja just beat Fichman in St Malo so that leaves Bally in a rather precarious position of 99, so I would imagine a win against Barrois tomorrow is needed.

Katie needs one more win at least as she's sitting provisionally at 102.

Those rankings are after the points have come off so they can't improve without winning.
As the above post implies, if Elena loses her QF, she will end the week in the top 100 only if no more than one player does enough to overtake her.

11 players could overtake her by doing the following: (I hope this list is complete and accurate, but it's been compiled from a quick skim through, so I can't guarantee it - I'll re-check it once the number of possible overtakers goes down a bit)

Katie O'Brien (in Shrewsbury QFs) if she reaches the semis
Akgul Amanmuradova (in Tashkent QFs) if she reaches the semis
Klara Zakopalova (in St Malo R2) if she reaches the semis
Masa Zec-Peskiric (in St Malo R2) if she reaches the semis - out in R2

Yung-Jan Chen (in Seoul QFs) if she makes the Final
Daria Kustova (in Tashkent QFs) if she reaches the Final
Rosana de los Rios (in St Malo R2) if she reaches the Final - now in QFs
Stephanie Dubois (no. 1 seed in Saguenay) if she reaches the Final

Shenay Perry (in Albuquerque R2) if she wins the title
Kimiko Date-Krumm (in Seoul QFs) if she wins the title
Alexandra Panova (in Tashkent R2) if she wins the title

The more additional matches Elena can win this week, the better her chances of ending it in the top 100 (e.g. if she wins her QF, she'll put 2-3 more players behind her and many of those listed above will need to do more to catch up too), while if Katie wins her QF, she'll be in a similar position to the one Elena is in now.

Anyway, if we want Elena and/or Katie to end the week in the top 100, we now know whose opponents to cheer for! wink

de los Rios has beaten Zec-Peskiric in St. Malo, so that's one imminent threat out of the way.

I think Dubois, who is playing the 50k in Canada could possibly overtake this week too with a Final/Win.
