Week 36 - Challenger (€42,500) - Seville, Spain - Clay

Morgan Phillips looks to join James Ward in the main draw but has a tough draw to qualify.

Faces Fernando Thomasa Trigueros in the round one, who has no ITF profile, but likely to be 4th seed Gabriel Trujillo Soler in round two, and then 6th seed Ignacio Coll-Riudavets in round three.

Can't see Morgan qualifying unfortunately, but would be great if he did.

L32: (8) James Ward WR 203 v (WC) Steven Diez (ESP) WR 631

Diez is an 18-year-old who won Spain F23 back in July, though he lost 3 & 1 to WR 665 in the only match he has played since. He beat the other Ward 2 & 3 in February and has a 3-0 record against Brits, but the other two were Paul Brown and Charlie Gode (Robert Dee's erstwhile doubles partner), both 1 & 0.

Wardy could hardly have asked for a nicer draw really, but (3) Santiago Ventura WR 118 is likely to lie in wait if he reaches the QFs.

I think Diez will push Wardy close. He's been climbing the rankings much faster.

It's heaven seeing Wardy and Morgan in the same tournament

Wardy must continue to win matches like these.

Sadly not at the same time:

QR1: Morgan Phillips WR 592 beat (WC) Fernando Thomasa-Trigueros (ESP) UNR by 1 & 0 smile
QR2: Morgan Phillips WR 592 lost to (q4) Gabriel Trujillo-Soler (ESP) WR 337 by 4 & 4 cry

Gimeno-Traver? How'd he pull that one off - he's not his brother is he?

Decent enough chance for Ward to reach another quarter final here, and it's the kind of draw we'd hope he can take advantage of.

I imagine Morgan trains at the same place that GT does and that's how they know each other...will be good for him to learn a bit from him anyway.

No, it's the 'real' Gimeno-Traver, who's the top seed in the singles here.

The drawsheet says this tournament is on 'yellow clay' - I can't remember seeing that before, though apparently it has been used for Challengers in Kazakhstan. Can't find any pics of it either.

I noticed that & was going to ask about it.  Best I can do by way of a pic after a bit of sleuthing is this one from the tournament site, such as it is:

Looks like a very pale imitation of the nasty red stuff to me! weirdface.gif

Oh good find - I noticed something when I was searching that implies it might be the normal clay surface before the red dust is added to soften it, i.e. a cross between red clay and hard.

Is it just coincidence that the headings on this board have changed to that colour too?
