He did beat Echegaray in the Campos do Jordao Challenger 4 weeks ago, but before this week, his record since winning the Sarasota Challenger was a worrying W 2 L 10.
I realise this doesn't take into account tournament strength (e.g. the grass court events tended to be a lot stronger), but his record on different surfaces this year is:
14-4 on clay 5-11 on hard 1-4 on grass 3-2 on carpet
Welcome to GB's version of Nikolay Davydenko!

The same Davydenko who won his 2 Masters Series events on a hard court and on carpet, reached the Masters Cup final indoors, has 3 Aussie Open QF's, 2 US Open SF's, as well as a round of 16 at Wimbledon.
Good point, but I'm pretty sure that in his younger days he was best on clay, good on carpet (I remember him beating Rusedski in the Moscow Final), mediocre on hard and rubbish on grass.
Edit: before 2007, he had won 6 tournaments on clay, 3 on carpet including Paris AMS and 2 on hard and his 3 other pre-2007 Finals were on clay too. He has an impressive 16-5 record in all Finals!

[James is] also partnering Kristian Pless again in the doubles. Fingers crossed for a good run for him this week.
Fairly easy first-round match for J & K: 3 & 4. They will face Nikola Ciric & Goran Tosic (SRB/MNE) in the QF after they took out the third seeds 6-6 7-6(3) today.
Both the boys will be busy boys tomorrow: James play Thomson in the second match on the centre court tomorrow, Kristian likewise on Court 2, while they team up for the doubles QF against Ciric & Tosic in the final match on Court 2.

Shaky performance there from Wardy but A quarter final is a quarter final and you'd take it with no questions asked. Next potential opponent Daniel Brands? He seems to thrive when he plays in Germany and i think he's a bit of a clay courter aswell knocking out Simon on the dirt this year if i'm not mistaken. Can't see James advancing any further really
Don't see him getting past Brands if he does have to face him, but it's been a good week so far for Ward and hopefully he'll continue his good form on the clay.
