top seed in qualifying now in main draw. I assume Elena would be first in line for a LL spot if she doesn't manage to qualify.

Well done Katie - great start. Tough loss for Georgie once more.

In Grand Slams there is a draw for LL places. If one or two places are available then the 4 highest ranked losers in final qualifying enter the draw. Further LL places increase the number in the draw, so that no player is ever guaranteed a LL spot before the draw.

It does mean that Elena and Katie are guaranteed to be in the draw if they lose in FQR and somebody withdraws of course.

Always useful for an extra bit of insurance.

Good idea about increasing the number in the draw to stop tanking.

No it doesn't ... though they would have a 1 in 4 chance if there was 1 LL place, 1 in 2 if there were 2, etc.

To clarify the last two points - there is no LL place at present but would be one if anyone else withdraws, now qualifying has started.

I think Djlovesyou was referring to Katie and Elena being guaranteed to be in the draw for LL places should any occur, whilst Steven is referring to the probability of them actually entering the main draw

.........and to state the obvious.  Both Katie and Bally would have to win two matches and make the FQR or none of the above applies!

Yep sorry, I meant the LL draw rather than the main draw.

Katie and Bally surely have to seize the challenge this week and finally make the top 100. They couldn't be any closer. Has to be a case of now or never for them both.

That really isnt the case at all for Katie. She was on the verge of the top 100 before and she slumped a bit and picked it back up so I think she could do it again if she had to. Bally needs this though, I think both players need fresh challenges next year- different players, tournies etc as I cant imagine either wanting to grind it out deep into ITF events for another year + .

I agree, it's not now or never, though now would be nice! smile.gif

Katie has already more than defended last year's USO points and has no more points coming off until 12 October, so she'll have a chance to reach the top 100 before then even if she doesn't qualify and win a main draw match, which is what she needs to do to make it by the end of the USO. Her best 9 counting point scores are all from this year.

Elena has 50 USO points to defend and 14 more to defend from Shrewsbury at the end of September and she only has a 2, 10, 12 and 18 to defend this year, with 8 of her best 9 counting point scores all coming from this year.
