Expanding on Elliott's post in case you want to know exactly who to cheer for:
The following players in the main draw have a chance of overtaking her:
- 11 players (de los Rios, Sevastova, Zac-Peskiric, Flipkens, Rus, Camerin, Glatch, Johansson, King, Dubois and Larcher de Brito) need a R1 win to overtake her (you might like to cheer for their opponents!) - it looks like Zahlavova-Strycova went out in the FQR btw
- 1 player (Dominguez-Lino) needs to reach R3 to overtake her
- 3 players (Mattek-Sands, Bremond and Rogowska) need to reach R4 to overtake her
- 2 players (Clijsters and Mladenovic) need to reach the QFs to overtake her
- 3 players (McHale, Brodsky and Cecil) need to reach the SFs to overtake her
In order to end up in the top 100 at the end of the USO without playing any more matches, Elena needs less than six of these players to reach the rounds set out above and nobody else within reach to overtake her by going deep in an ITF event over the next two weeks.

Where does it say that sorry? Could have known that despite being highest ranked she would have no chance at a LL spot. It sucks that there are so many players injured anyway, and that her and Laura should both be ready and preparing for a match worth 100 points :(
Bally has been overtaken by Kerber, Flipkens, King, Larcher de Brito, Sevastova and Dubois and currently stands at 100 in the rankings. I expect Clijsters will leapfrog her in the rankings before the end of the US Open.
Barbora Zahlavova Strycova will overtake Bally too surely? She qualified and has now won her 1st round match. So that puts her at 101 and thats providing Clijsters doesn't reach QFs and Mattek Rd4. I'm sure she will get there soon enough though, she has more belief these days
The table at http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=236674 (which seemed to suggest earlier in the week that Zahlavova Strycova had gone out in qualifying, hence what I said above, but now shows her as having reached R2 of the main draw) shows her and the six players mentioned by Elliott ahead of Elena, but Kerber was already ahead of Elena after the fqr, when Elena was provisionally 94th.
So, Elena is now provisionally WR 100 but still under threat from Mattek-Sands (Venus should take care of her in R2) and Clijsters.
So, for Elena to be ranked 100, we have to hope that Venus takes out Mattek-Sands, Clijsters goes out before the QFs and nobody else close to the top 100 manages to sneak in under the radar by doing well in an ITF event this week or next. Nail-biting stuff.

In which case I imagine that we are all going to be Venus Williams fans this week then as she can do Elena a massive favour by taking out Mattek-Sands in R2 and then Clijsters in R4, I shall go off and buy a 'Go Venus' banner.....
Already a Venus fan hoping she will do both of these things. I do fear that Clijsters will hit enough balls to make Venus self destruct should they meet though.
