Week 33 - Cincinnati Masters (ATP 1000 Series) - QF: Andy vs Julien Benneteau

The Frenchman's made the most of his LL berth, courtesy of JMDP's withdrawal on ground of fatigue!  He's reached the QF by beating, somewhat surprisingly, IMHO,  Jürgen Melzer &, earlier today, GGL, but is probably "cruisin' for a bruisin'" agin Andy, who hasn't yet dropped a set.  The two have met only once before, in the last 64 at Wimbledon in 2006, when Andy won in four.  Can't see JB levelling the head-to-head this time round... pray.gif

The 27 yr-old Frenchman isn't likely to be feeling too lively tomorrow either, after his 3hr+ marathon win today.

Can't ask for a better draw for a MS QF than that.

Murray should have no trouble at all booking his spot in the semi final and it will be a huge surprise if he even drops a set.

Bennetaeu's final was today and he was delighted when he managed to get the win, but it will have taken a lot out of him.

And assuming he doesn't (have any trouble, that is), he will face either Rog or Oz Brat in the SF. wink

At least he's finally levelled the match:  4-6 6-3! *mops brow*

A good battle in the end from Andy but excellent effort from Benneteau who ran out of legs. Well done to both. Points defended for last 2 masters - bonus from now on.

That's more like it:  6-1 in the third.  Sounded as though JB's marathon match to reach the QF yesterday really told against him in the end! biggrin

Well, er, at least it was a W.

Diabolical first set. Thank you to whoever set the alarm clock for the end of the twelfth game, but I wish you had set it a bit earlier - he looked, and played, as though he were still asleep.

Andy, please, if it is Federer tomorrow, play better than that. If it's Hewitt I don't mind if you lose and get some more recovery time for the USO!

Good win. Benneteau played some excellent tennis but faded towards the end. The wind seemed to cause both players problems.

I could only watch the first set and it was a complete horror.
A win is a win , but this should have been 2 not 3 sets.

The good news about that was he won, but not a very good performance, at least to begin with.

First set was pretty dreadful by Murray but from what I could see, he seemed to wake up a bit having gone a set and a break down (at which point the stream became almost unwatchable from midway through the second set)

Sounds like he got better as the match went on and Bennetaeu ran out of energy, but to begin with, Murray was allowed Bennetaeu to dictate the match.

There's no real reason why Murray should struggle with the wind so much given the amount of spin he puts on his shots and how rarely he does play flat, but it does seem to give him trouble, which is something that may need to be improved in the future.

The only theory I could come up with for 3 abysmal performances in the wind was that Andy likes to hit comparatively slow shots which can be affected more by the wind than driven ones. The adjustment shouldn't take more than a set though.

You really expect a guy to play 8 matches at the highest level in 11 days, and to play at 100% in every minute of every one of them?

Unbelievable stuff ....
