Girls: ITF Digicel Junior International, St Vincent & The Grenadines - Grade 5 (Week 32)

Here, belatedly, is news of a third British title last week, to go with the two in Portugal. Sophie Morrill, a former hitting partner of Laura Robson, has won her first ITF title, and also reached the doubles final.

R1

Sophie Morrill (GBR) defeated Siara Sibblies-Goodluck (VIN) 6-0 6-0

2nd Round

Sophie Morrill  (GBR) defeated (2) Lee-Anne Lingo (TRI)  6-1 6-3

Quarterfinal

Sophie Morrill  (GBR) defeated Johnnise Renaud (USA) 6-3 6-1

Semifinal

Sophie Morrill (GBR) defeated (3) Nelo Phiri (USA) 6-2 6-4

Final

Sophie Morrill  (GBR) defeated Sharissa Ryan  (USA) 1-6 6-3 6-2

If like me you know little about Sophie then here is an interesting article:

Nice to see a young player winning an ITF title so early. Incidentally, Nelo Phiri, Morrill's semifinal opponent, actually beat Tara Moore in the Orange Bowl U12 in 2004, so that was a good win for Sophie.

All the best to young Sophie. Grade 5 is the starting off point I presume...how does entry work into the higher grades etc ?

Grades go from 5 up to 1 then A, with low and unranked players encouraged to play Grade 5s (they would rarely make the ranking cut-off for higher grades anyway). Now that Sophie has enough points to move into the top 1000 she will get in to some higher Grade events, qualifying certainly and occasionally main draw, assuming that the LTA rubberstamps her entries.
