James Auckland to retire at the end of the season

Announced on LTA Twitter.

Real shame, got sidetracked for some much less talented doubles players and definitely deserved to be a solid top 50 doubles player

Not totally surprised by this, he is a married man and I guess he wants to start a family and wants to start earning a solid wage as I suspect he is not making much profit from playing challenger level doubles.

At the moment he is not that far away from making the top 100, so maybe if he gets some good results between now and the end of the season he will reconsider.

Will always remember when he qualified and reached the QF's at ATP Mumbai, and when he reached the final of a ATP doubles tournament (Delray Beach?).

its always sad when a player opts to retire, but he is closing in on 30 and may feel now is the time to move elsewhere, the grind of the tour can eventually catch up and if you lose the passion then its time to stop. I'm guessing he will go into coaching with the LTA in some form as most of the ex-players seems to do.

Matt (AKA Fitz) from AM.com has made a lovely little article about James, featuring excerpts from an interview with him and some quotes about his future.

Aucks not in the Valencia draw (was hoping he and Andy would get a wild card) so it looks like he is gone for good now, and the farewell tourney with Andy is not going to happen. cry
