RE: Week 33 - Futures F2 (10k) - Koksijde, Belgium - Clay

I just had a quick look as well and I think the plan was to play the 2 bottom half quarter finals today, with the semis tomorrow.

Ah, you're quite right, Josh.  Should perhaps have scrolled down a bit further...! redface.gif  Chaki (3) is going to be a real threat, should Dan get past Reuter & into the final...

Just to re-cap and to get it onto this page...

SF: WC REUTER, Yannik (BEL) UNR v SMETHURST, Daniel (GBR) WR796

The winner could well play the 3rd see Chaki. Dan beat Chaki in straight sets in last weeks SF so fingers crossed.

It is great to see a Brit who's tennis education seems to have been in the UK doing so well on the clay.

Come on Dan!

Good news to get back home to:

FINAL: Dan Smethurst WR 796 beat (3) Rabie Chaki (MAR) WR 481 by 7-5 3-6 6-2 biggrin

Chaki was the defending champion here as well as the no. 3 seed this time around, so that's an excellent win for Dan, his first Futures title in his third Futures Final! biggrin

Source: http://www.omnisports.be/depeche.php?num=945&sport=1 (still nothing on a ATP, ITF or TE but one of the links on the tournament site took me to omnisports.de and a link to ITF 10.000$ / Coxyde, which is clearly the French spelling of Koksijde!)

Conqueror of the Belgians Gigounon, Diercks and Reuter in earlier rounds, Daniel Smethurst (GBR, ATP 796) won the Koksijde ITF Futures tournament (clay) on Sunday afternoon, a competition with $10K in prize money. The Brit imposed himself in three sets 7-5 3-6 6-2 against the winner of the first <i.e. 2008> Koksijde Future: the Franco-Moroccan Rabie Chaki (ATP 481). It was the first tournament win in 2009 for the player from Manchester who will celebrate his 19th birthday in October.

Earlier this season, he had been fallen to defeat in the Finals of two tournaments like this. They were in Pitesti (Romania) in May, and last Sunday in Eupen against the Belgian Yannick Vandenbulcke. The two players had already faced each other in the semi-finals of the singles draw of last week's Future in Eupen (ITF 10K). That time, the Brit won in two sets 6-4 7-5 before going down in the Final in the face of the Antwerp player Yannick Vandenbulcke. Remember that on Friday afternoon, Chaki had won the doubles title together with the Belgian Frédéric de Fays.

What's the chance of a report as detailed and accurate as that appearing on one of the GB news sites ... wink
