Expected result. We might have won if Andy had been 100%, but I would always expect a good established pair to beat a scratch pair, no matter how good the individual players are.
If Andy does play tomorrow I hope the wrist is good enough for him to beat Janowicz, but returning those bombs of serves might do a heck of a lot of damage if he tries to return them with the double-handed backhand. And you just know the Polish Captain is going to tell Janowicz to send everything to Murray's backhand, don't you. . .
I'll have to record this as I will be out at the Great North Run until heaven knows what time. Good luck to whoever plays, and if it is a live tie, special good wishes to Evo. Prz-whatsisname may be ranked 600-odd but has been as high as 190 I think, and has a lot of experience. He played very well against Andy and I would be really chuffed if Dan can beat him.
can i ask why everyone is doubting evans so much when he has only lost to one person below his ranking at the time of the match all year off clay, and that was Scott Oudsema at the start of the year???
We are not going to win this tie. Evans is to nervous and has a bad attitude for a 5th rubber in an important tie.
Tbh i dont know how he has got to 200 and whatever in the rankings, hes a bit of a hacker, in his match against Janowicz, it was up to Janowicz if he wanted to win or lose. Dan didnt really do anything, he doesnt hit big anywhere in his shots, he mixes it up well, but so do many Brits. I would actually give Fleming the 5th rubber.
Not being to disheartening to the guy, but i have seen him play (not just here), i dont like his attititude, he has the wrong head at the moment for Davis Cup. All credit to him for where he has got to, he is a hard worker- when he wants to be. But I woud have preffered a bigger hitter who is good in the head. Even Boggo-even if he did lose.
I still am hopeful that Dan can do the business and I did myself originally want him to be given the chance.
But he was not impressive in his first match and I hope that I haven't to eat humble pie about taking issue about the experience factor and that he could produce when it mattered in an eminently winmnable match ( I hope he still can )
Anyway I just wish all the very best to Andy and Andy's pick ( according to OEM and what's that all about ?! )
I have no problem with people saying Dan is not going to win, as I confess I have that belief also, but I really don't think there is anyone better out there we could have picked.
It's unfair to say Dan is not going to make it because he doesn't have a major weapon. Plenty of British players have major weapons like Bloomers (serve) and Slabba (forehand) etc etc and they have been nowhere near the top 100. Dan has talent. He is very comfortable moving the ball, the way he dictates the ball instead of letting the ball dictate him reminds me of Andy sometimes. I remember he played a shot at a futures doubles final earlier this season that brought about a sustained round of applause from the ten or so people watching on the balcony that had barely dropped a pin all match. It was WORLD CLASS.
Dan is the only player that is capable of breaking the top 100 in the near-ish future, IMO, and we should throw all our weight behind him.
Let's face it, behind Murray we are a very poor team, and, I'll tell you one thing, Group 2 has some teams that are more than capable of beating us.
I'm not sure that Dan will win but I think he has a good chance. I would feel better about it if I felt that Lloyd were able to get him inspired. . . 'nuff said.
I'm hoping he will do it and with the only other option being Fleming (who I like) I don't think Lloyd can change his mind now and put Colin in. I was impressed by Dan when he played Davydenko at Wimbledon, I think he might have the big match temperament, and if he can get a decent start he might manage the win. If he gets behind and gets down on himself, I'm not so sure. That's where you would need Lloyd to encourage him. Hmmm.
Of course if Andy's wrist is still bothering him he just might lose to Janowicz. . .
So in the worse case scenario, Evo loses in straights without ever looking like winning and we are relegated to group 2. What are the chances that Boggo will be asked to play the next tie in 2010?
have to disagrwe with spuds view on evans. i have seen dan play numerous times and he can be arrogant on crt but a fighter he is. he does have some big shots also and can certainly hit winners on both flanks. we need someone like dan who will fight and expect him t win.
Ha ha, I had been slightly tempted to say Dan's ranking might just be due to the tennis matches he's won
Actually more specifically, it's mainly down to the matches he won 6 months ago at the Jersey Challenger.
Out of interest I looked at the effect of his Jersey Challenger title win in March ( which accounts for 5 of the challenger wins above ) had on his rankings.
It accounts for a massive 75 of his 163 points.
Dan was ranked 439 going into Jesey and if he hadn't scored any points that week he would currently actually be ranked slightly lower at 448. So he certainly resultswise hasn't played near his current ranking level since and that allows for his much more recent challenger semi.
In actual fact he has beaten only 3 players in the top 1000 since Jersey, all in July ( i.e. rank 506 in the Manchester Challenger and ranks 133 qnd 208 in the Lexington Challenger ).
Which in a way is kinda worrying in that arguably we have a 448 ranked plus a really good week in Jersey player.
Wish I hadn't looked at that.....
Still, c'mon Dan !
