Boys: National Championships (U14/U12/U16) - Weeks 32/33

These three championships are held on American Clay at the West Hants Club, starting with the Under 14s on Monday. Top ranked Evan Hoyt missed the European Championships, and was forced to retire in a Category 1 event this week, so has withdrawn from the event. That leaves European Championships finalist Kyle Steven as top seed, followed by Luke Bambridge, Christopher Pearce and leading 1996 boy Shakeel Manji. Luke and Chris warmed up this week by reaching the semis of the Belgian Category 1 event

The main draw is here:

Of the top 4 seeds only Chris Pearce was troubled, dropping a set to Adam Glynn. Luke Bambridge takes on Alex Sendegeya, who has spent time at Bollettieri's, in round 2

Final

(1) Kyle Edmund d. (2) Luke Bambridge 6-1 4-6 6-4

A very good month for Kyle, coming on top of the European Championships final

From the LTA site: When I was a set and 4-0 up it looked like it was going to be easier than I thought it would be, but Luke is a fantastic competitor and he just wouldnt say die. I must have just lost concentration and even I was thinking that I didnt know what to do, said Edmund.

Eventually in the third set I managed to get a couple of games and get my rhythm again. Thats often the equation that the quality of tennis steps up in the deciding set of a final and that was certainly the case here, but Im just really pleased to have come out on top.

Sacha has stormed through, unseeded, to the semis without dropping a set. What's his main strengths?

SF

(1) Lucas Taylor v (6) Bjorn Thomson
Sacha Modica v (2) Vincent Gillespie

Sacha's comment after his quarter final:

I played quite well, changing my game up in the second set, said Modica. In the first set I was a bit too defensive and not really creating chances with the ball so I decided to hit more on my forehand and use my brain more. Im not worried to be playing a seed in the semis, Ill just stick to my own game plan.

His game plan wasn't good enough to make much impression on the second seed though.

SF

(1) Lucas Taylor d. (6) Bjorn Thomson 7-6(3) 5-7 6-3
(2) Vincent Gillespie d. Sacha Modica 6-4 6-1

Final

(1) Lucas Taylor v (2) Vincent Gillespie

Final

(1) Lucas Taylor d. (2) Vincent Gillespie 6-2 7-6(4)

Lucas adds this title to the U12 Winter Grand Prix Masters and the U12 clay-court championships. The top seeds joined forces to win the doubles.

The under 16s started today, and in the absence of Oliver Golding it will be a major surprise if Andrew Bettles or George Morgan fail to reach the final. Kyle Edmund continued his fine summer by knocking out a seed, having stepped up from the under 14s. The draw is here:
