The quest to follow Tara Moore as national champion starts at the NTC on Saturday with qualifying. There is less strength in depth than in the boys event, so no-one in the top 500 ITF has to qualify. The seeds in the main draw are Jocelyn Rae, Samantha Vickers, Hannah James, Stephanie Cornish, Nicola George, Jessica Ren, Laura Slater and Lisa Whybourn. Francesca Stephenson and Joanna Henderson have been wildcarded into the main draw after good performances in recent ITF events.
No great drama on day 1 with Laura Slater the only seed to fall. Round 2 sees some intriguing match-ups with Alex Walker taking on Jess Ren, Nicola George v Fran Stephenson and Amy Askew v Sam Vickers
Is it me or does tis event seem much weaker this year?
Where is Jennifer Ren?
It is a bit weaker than usual - perhaps the LTA are taking a more lenient approach to players searching for ITF points elsewhere (several are in Portugal or the Netherlands). Jennifer withdrew from the U18s (perhaps still struggling with the back injury which has hampered her this year) but is still down for the U16s

From the LTA: Im really pleased with the result today, although it wasnt the easiest match," said Rae. "Jess started really well, she showed a lot of resistance, and I found it difficult to find a rhythm in my game, but I started to get on top of the match at the end of the first set."

So just as in the Boys the singles winner took both titles. Jos told the LTA: "It was a fairly scrappy match and although we both played well, neither of us played as good as we can and it probably could have gone either way,
