No, Mad's right - the bye does have a woeful record, at least when playing as a man, but did once win a match for a W 1 L 4477 record in singles. The bye has W 0 L 3117 record in doubles, but does have a doubles career high of 1430 on 26 Jun 2000!
According to Laura's twitter she won 6-1 6-2 which in my opinion is a much better scoreline than I would have expected. In fact I thought she was a slight underdog.
It gets odder though - if you look at the Sydney Indoor 1976 drawsheet at http://www.atpworldtour.com/Share/Event-Draws.aspx?e=427&y=1976, you see that Gullikson beat A Gardiner in R1. He then faced P. McNamara in R2 and the winner of that match was T. Waltke, who wasn't even playing in it.
As if that wasn't enough, a certain K Warwick lost to C Letcher in R2 (See the bottom of the draw) and then beat the same C Letcher in R3.
