love to know why everyone thinks pauffley is a weakened player!? fair enough his ranking might not be up there but he hits the ball as hard if not harder than some of these guys and on his day could be a tough match for anyone
Some strange results with Milton and Cox losing to lower ranked Brits which is not what you'd have expected from them. Hopefully it's not the 500 curse and they've just had a bad day, but those are matches you'd have expected them to win if they are to progress up the rankings.
Hopefully that win for Thornley will turn around his season and he can kick on from it, but has to make sure that he follows it up now.
Eaton and Rice probably should also get a win today, but this event doesn't look as if it will be as good as Frinton was.
None of these guys are outstanding talents like Murray, Del Potro, etc, so why the surprise at their up and down results?
If you play in a tournament which is about the right level for you, you will win and lose in a fairly random fashion, depending upon the draw, whether you ate a bad kebab last night, whether your opponent plays a blinder ...
Sometimes you'll put a few results together and climb the rankings, but unfortunately the most likely follow-on from that is a regression to the mean, where you'll fall back to where you came from.
Because the only way to make a sustained climb up the rankings is to improve more than all those other pesky guys who want to do the same.
Cox at his best is probably a little bit better than Pauffley at his best. So Pauffley at 100% will probably beat Cox at 90%. Not exactly a big shock ....

I'm pretty shocked at Milton and Coxys loss. Cos is a better player than Pauffley based on results to date but this match seems like a bit of an anomily.
Wow, what's Neil on this week? As you said, rubbish results in the Brit v non-Brit matches (well, I had hoped Sean might win at least) but I didn't expect Burnham to get that close to the defending champion, that's quite impressive.

No, Ratty. Cox regularly beats Challenger level players where as Pauffley rarely wins Futures matches. Irrespective of how talented they are or whether any of them are as good as Murray or JMDP, Pauffers beating Cox is not something you would expect.
Anyway, I am not shocked by the fact that he lost. I am totally aware that anyone can beat anyone in a tennis match. I am shocked since Cox lost three easy matches in three back to back tournaments, right after winning a title, hence I was wondering if something was wrong with him. Maybe it's just a temporary loss of form...
I say Federer stole his mojo during the Wimbly practice session. There's no other way he was breaking Sampras's record.

Maybe like players tended to raised their game against Boggo when he was with Brad Gilbert, everyone now raises their game against "Fed's practice partner".

Chris Eaton beat (Q) Frederik Sletting-Johnsen (NOR) 2-6 7-6(4) 6-3
OK, so it took him three sets to see off a qualifier, but in the context of the rest of today's results, better that he got there in the end than lost!

Good result in the end of course, but it makes you wonder how Chris can beat and compete with great players and almost lose to players ranked in the 1000s :O :D.
