RE: British women's Twitter accounts

I'd noticed he uses the 'royal we' a lot ... then again, so does OEM/the Net Post!

:)

Actually, Steven, given how useful they are becoming for getting results, could you add the twitter links to the top 25 table as their own column rather than just as an alternative if there is no blog.

I'm not too keen on adding extra columns to a table that must already look daunting to anyone seeing it for the first time, but this is only a very small column, so I've added it to the women's table, since 15/25 of them are now on Twitter and lots of them have some other presence on the web (such as an official site or blog) too.

Not nearly as many of the GB men are on twitter, so I'll leave the men's table as it is for now.

Oops, having been out most of the afternoon and early evening, I seem to have messed up my "I'll try not to twitter too much" policy by tweeting 6 times in half an hour ... in my defence, it has been a VERY busy day for the Brits around the world!

I don't think he understands that it has to be moer than just himself involved to constitue a 'team'.

Apparently nor does Nino - "@GBtennis As I am sure the Gbtennis team knows, coaches will no doubt drink loads of coffee. Nothing like Italian, would say that!! nino"

Does this mean the GBtennis name has confused him that I'm the LTA (surely not, he must recognise them by now) or is he aware that I'm part of the 'team' here (and maybe thinks it must be more than one of us twittering to cover all those odd hours the tweets appear at LOL) ... hmmm.

Did you ask him whether he had a major liking for coffee.

The exchange went:

Xenon21: @nseverino Awesome blog and great tips! Could use for footie too. :) You are what you eat? So I am a chocolate at times hehe

nseverino: @xenon21 Hey zenon, not even going to start to tell what that makes me, here's a clue..... Grande.....Coach Nino.

Xenon21: @nseverino hehe. Good thing I know a bit of french else I'd think it's making u grand. :) Am sure u do enough exercise 2 stop u being grande

me: @xenon21 Given that @nseverino has an Italian name, I am guessing the 'grande' has something to do with the size of coffee he drinks! LOL

... and then as above.

Not worth repeating all that drivel really, sorry about that! LOL

...So, I'm aiming to complement the T25 tables by highlighting important wins/losses,  adding some numbers (be it relative rankings, rankings implications of a win, winning streaks or whatever) and giving a taster of what people can find on this forum (i.e. that we are often first with the results and we try to put the results realistically into context) to hopefully start tempting in people who don't post here already. As with the T25 tables, suggestions for stuff to add/omit are very welcome.

Steven, I'm a bit confused by a couple of posts.

I can see why you might not want to add too much to the existing tables, so does the second paragraph refer to a separate table (or link from the main table?), or are you planning to squeeze these extras into the current one?

The second paragraph refers to what I'm trying to do with the @GBtennis tweets. I added the GB women's twitter links as a separate column on their top 25 table. The two paragraphs weren't meant to be linked, apologies if it was confusing.

That sounds good thinking re twitter.  Maybe indeed highlight the T25 tables, important results  and other statistical info that will stand out from others maybe just posting results, maybe even to the exclusion of passing on some results, though I realise this week is pretty busy, yesterday in particular.

Not trying to put a dampner on anything but what's actually the point of it? Surely all the information you're going to be posting is available here and the only people who are going to be reading the page are people who found the link from here?

I agree, that really would be pretty pointless smile.gif but that's a bit like saying the top 25 tables themselves are pointless (no doubt some people think they are wink) because anyone can find all the info by trawling through the threads here ... or that the bt.net home page is pointless for the same reason - I don't think it is, but I'm well aware that it is a tremendous task to keep that going, which is why it varies from bang up to date sometimes to days or weeks out of date at other times.

The gbtennis tweets are aimed mainly at those who currently use the top 25 tables and want a bit of extra info/context without having to trawl through the threads (though I'm hoping to be able to tempt a lot more new people into the threads over time than I give an 'excuse' not to read them!) or want to know when there's likely to have been an update to one of the tables without having to keep checking them individually - that probably applies to quite a lot of people and the BT.net stats page gets 200-300 hits per day from over 100 unique IP addresses, so there must be plenty of people who use it but don't post here yet.

The tweets also provide a kind of news ticker halfway down http://www.freewebs.com/britishtennis/stats.html that is far less detailed but more up to date than the news on the home page - indeed, perhaps the kind of thing we should be thinking of for the home page long-term is a twitter news feed like this with the odd longer article (it would certainly take the pressure off those who maintain the home page at the moment) and doing this but confining it to the stats page is a nice way to test whether it is the kind of thing that could work longer term.

I am also hoping that it will provide a way to help new people find out about us who might never have found out about us otherwise ... including perhaps some players. That already seems to be working a bit - not that many regular posters on here have become followers (they're welcome to if they want to, but as you said they probably have the least need to do so!) - most followers so far seem to be people who don't post much on here (though they may lurk as guests, who knows) or Brits from other tennis sites that have much less coverage of the lower-ranked GB players, and people joining because they've noticed me posting about (judging from their own tweets) their favourite player, perhaps because they've done a search for that player's name and noticed one of my tweets.

I will shamelessly end all the tweets about GB players at Wimbledon with the #wimbledon tag too, which might attract their fans or people like I was once, who wondered what on earth the GB WCs got up to the rest of the year but had no idea where to find out.

All this might turn out to be a complete waste of time, but there's nothing lost by giving it a go, and at the moment it seems to take virtually no extra time on top of what I'm already looking up for the tables and/or posting here.

That was a much longer answer than you wanted (and a much longer answer than I intended to write), apologies for that! hmm
