Week 27 - Futures F18 ($15K) - Carpi, Italy

L32: Morgan Phillips WR 850 v (Q) Jacopo Marchegiani (ITA) WR 1431

A good R1 draw against a player who lost to Tim Hewitt in his only previous match against a Brit smile but yes, you've guessed it, the winner is likely to play the no. 1 seed in R2. cry

At last, at the end of the day, a win against a non-Brit! (deduced from tomorrow's OoP since there are no results yet)

L32: Morgan Phillips WR 848 beat (Q) Jacopo Marchegiani (ITA) WR 1417 by tbc smile.gif

L16: Morgan Phillips WR 848 v (1) Matteo Marrai (ITA) WR 347

Marrai was beaten 4 & 4 by Slabba in the New Caledonia Challenger in January but beat Jamie Baker back in 2005 and is very consistent at going deep (semis and beyond) in Futures.

Singles win confirmed, 1-6 6-4 6-2, but interestingly, he & his Italian partner, Sandro Accardo, have given their QF opponents a walkover in the doubles!

Accardo retired from his singles match, so they'll have scratched from the doubles because of his injury and it should mean Morgan is still ok.

I don't know why, but I had a feeling Morgan might win this - still a lovely surprise though! smile.gif

L16: Morgan Phillips WR 848 beat (1) Matteo Marrai (ITA) WR 347 by 6-1 6-7(3) 6-3 biggrin

QF: Morgan Phillips WR 848 v (8) David Goffin (BEL) WR 448

Goffin has a 4-0 record against Brits, including a 1 & 2 thrashing of Sean Thornley a few weeks ago.

I think your feeling would have been based on the fact that Morgan is a flipping good player!

I wonder where he'd be if he hadn't had so much time out with his knee

Morgan just needs a couple of good weeks so he can get that ranking up to where it should be, as he's definately a top 400 player, but obviously the injury has cost him a lot of time and probably means that he'll never make it as high as he could have done.

Before the first injury he had just thrashed Andujar, who went on to make the top 100, and is still around the fringes of it, if not inside it still, so perhaps it's not too unrealistic to say he could have been inside the top 200.

Also, is there any chance this event is actually in Capri?

No it really is Carpi in Northern Italy, not the better known island.

LOL given the tournament poster at http://www.tenniscarpi.it/FuturesItaly09/Presentazione.html, I think the organisers got there before you! Actually, I'll put an image link to it here, since it's their advertising, I can't imagine them objecting to it being visible here, especially when there's a link to their site too.

P.S. it's not anywhere near the coast and the name Carpi comes from the name of a tree, so they must be playing on the pun!
