Week 27 - ATP ($500,000) - Newport, U.S.A

Josh Goodall and Chris Eaton turn up at the qualies event here, such a big shame they will probably run into each other in the 2nd round- so no chance of more than 1 qualifier here.

1st round:
Chris Eaton vs Samuel Groth  - Battle of the Servers here smile.gif Hope Chris can edge it.

Josh Goodall vs Bye

2nd round:
Josh Goodall vs Chris Eaton/Samuel Groth

Chris plays today 4th on court 2.

It will be a close match I'm sure as there will be few breaks, if any. I think Chris may have a bit more Grass court pedigree but Groth probably has the bigger serve. They both serve-volley a lot, the grass is really naff here so that is the way to play it I've heard so a match that will come down to a few shanked forehand lobs and net cords in my view.

So far the live scorboard seems to be putting thematches up, leaving them blak for 90 minutes or so and then removing them.

Results page taking a while to load as well.

Surely these bigger events should have no excuse for making a hash of things like the scoreboard.

Sad day for Chris, pretty much shows that he is going to make it as an ATP Tour level player. Anyway let's hope Josh can redeem some pride for the Brits by beating Groth.

With Groth's first serve being so huge its no wonder. Groth out-aced Chris 16-3 which is a little disapponting.

The way Chris has been playing recently, it would have been a bit of an ask to expect him to do well here, and it's not a surprise at all to find that he lost to Groth.

Hopefully Josh can get revenge on him today, but it's a match that will have very few, if any, service breaks, so Josh cannot afford to have any bad games on the serve.

Just needs to replicate how he played against Llodra and should be fine.

Absolute rubbish from Newport, just heard from Josh, its been baking since he got there, but they were put on a ligtning quick indoor court for no reason? The courts were crap with no space at the back of the court to even move, Groths serve was impossible to break. A big waste of time for him, you would expect better fromsuch a "famous event".

Yeh, for some weird reason all matches were held indoors for qualifying. Maybe a hint on why the scores were crap, a bit like Queens qualifying when theres were held indoor just giving the result.
