Week 25 - Wimbledon Rd 2: Elena Baltacha v Kirsten Flipkens

The match is scheduled second on court 4, after Melzer v Becker.

H2H  Elena (Bally) Baltacha v Kirsten (Flipper) Flipkens

2-0

Bally won 6-1 6-1 in Jersey (2005)
Bally won 6-3 6-3 in Torhout (2008)

Both matches were indoors, with Bally going on to win the tournament. However Flipper is much higher ranked now (she was coming back from long-term injury in 2008), so should provide stronger opposition than before.

Court 4 ?

With only 2 Brits left...she gets shunted to 4 ?

Okay maybe not centre or even crt 1 but certainly crt 2.

Poor, poor poor. Anne was knocked back to court 4 and now Bally but they put Goodall on court 2. Have they got a bias to the men?

Perhaps they've put her on Court 4 (the old Court 3?) because they're both ranked outside the top 100. IT still seems pretty poor to me, and after Tuesday's performance they can hardly claim they're trying to save her from show court nerves!

Looking at TBE's rankings Bally could sneak a top 100 spot with a win here if Vania King loses vs. Pennetta although it looks more possible than probable with the 100K in Cuneo next week.

Best of luck.

Obviously the crowds would much rather watch Wozniacki v Kirilenko....

WIMBLEDON THURSDAY ORDER OF PLAY

C (1300 BST start)
DEL POTRO Arg 5 v Hewitt Aus MS
WOZNIACKI Den 9 v Kirilenko Rus WS
MURRAY GB 3 v Gulbis Lat MS

1 (1300 BST start)
V WILLIAMS US 3 v Bondarenko Ukr WS
Kunitsyn Rus v RODDICK US 6 MS
GONZALEZ Chi 10 v Mayer Arg MS

I find this one bizarre - it's not as if there are loads of other top quality matches today.

Bally is unfortunately on the wrong half of the draw in terms of the name value players in the womens event.

On her half of the draw are Safina, Mauresmo, Wozniacki, Kuznetsova, Venus, Ivanovic and Jankovic, so for her to manage to push most of them out of a show court would be a surprise.

Expected her to be on a better court than court 4 though...maybe not centre or one, but court two or court three for sure.

But then this is Wimbledon...the only one of the slams that goes out of its way to stop it's players fro being on a show court.

The French always put their players on Chatrier/Lenglen if they can. The US are known for having an OOP that is advantageous towards its own players. And the Aussie Open seems to put Aussies in night matches, however unknown they may be, must to the disgust of the BBC who then has to televise a match involving two "no-name" players.

Sorry, but that's a total joke ( and a bad oine !  )

It's not even necessary to go into much more detail,(  i.e. like my usual waffle ) about why it's a joke, and I think some of it is already covered..

One British woman left, plays exciting spirited match.  Then  Court 4  !!!!!!!   headbang.gif

Who knows, maybe she requested it? Though hard to see why she would...

Maybe she didn't want the pressure and attention of a show court?? Though having played so well on one in her first round encounter I don't see why...

I'm really nervous about this match.

Bally should win it on grass but i just have a feeling that she wont.

Melzer has just closed it out against Becker in straight sets, so Baltacha should be on soon.
