What a relief that Bally was able to play at the top of her level, as she often does at Wimbledon, and stop the media having a field day at the loss of all the women. As a bonus it is the first time I can recall a British woman winning a match in the women's main draw on either of the two main courts for 15 years at least (Sam Smith beat Conchita Martinez on the old Court 2).
It's a difficult time for Anne, who is clearly struggling to cope with the added pressures of playing on home soil as the highest ranked Brit since the early 90s. The Roland Garros humiliation has probably dented her confidence and she has the worry of defending points now - for players who break on to the Tour after several years playing Challengers it is often the second year which is hardest. At least the next 2 months are on her favourite surface.
There are lengthy interviews with most of the British players who played today on the Wimbledon website (Players section)
So pleased for Bally. I was convinced she was going to blow it after she lost that first service break in the final set, but am delighted to be proved wrong! Keep up the good work, Elena. And thank heaven for the "red button"...
The victory also propels Baltacha into the top 100 in the rankings and she said: "I knew I would get there if I won going into the match so it was a very important match for me.
Dont think tht it actually does take her into the top100.. if she wins the next round then probaly.
Elena - http://www.wimbledon.org/en_GB/news/interviews/2009-06-23/200906231245791476609.html - you can almost feel the excitement in her voice just reading the transcript - e.g. "I kept thinking, I'm gonna win this. I am gonna win this. There's no way I'm gonna lose this. No way. I kept thinking of match point, when I get to match point, how I'm gonna play match point. You know, I tried to keep visualizing how I was gonna win it, you know. But I didn't think of celebrating, 'cause just before my celebration I think, Right, you've still got a bit to do now. But I did constantly keep saying to myself, You are going to win this. You are definitely within a shout. There's no doubt, you're going to come through this. When I did actually come through, I didn't believe it." ... and she's well aware that she is 2-0 H2H v Flipper
I'm not sure about a couple of bits, the bits about "around 50" and "over 50" and the fact that she seems to think she's in the top 100 until last year's points drop off, when of course they'll drop off at the same time as this year's points go on.
She may well be right about it being very likely that she'll be a DA for the USO already though - she's got a chance of getting in after withdrawals if she is ranked where she is now and she has no points to defend between now and then ... which also means that if she did **** Flipper and get in the *** ***, she'd stay there until the USO at least.

Trust the Beeb to take the confused bits of her interview at face value ...

I thought the first question at Anne's post-match interview was really insensitive -- "do you feel as though you've let a few people down today". Well done to that journalist - what a plonker.

I'm so happy about Bally! She's more of a big match player than the other Brit girls i think. Maybe she will hit the top 100 if surrounding players are due to lose points? She certainly seems to think so and i'm sure she knows how to work these things out more than any of us? If she does beat Flipkens does anybody know what her ranking would be then? Top 90?

I think there has been a huge oversight here and that the LTA are not choosing the best prospects for the wildcards. Surely you look at the potential on grass and not just our highest ranked most looked after players. Cavaday is our best grass court player without doubt and she's a true fighter. She won comfortably against Elena at Nottingham so why no WC ?
If Cavaday was our best player on grass, then there is no reason for why she couldn't have qualified. She was in Qualifiers but failed to get through so we cant complain. In a way had she qualified then she would have been at an advantage because it would have increased her confidence, so i'm not sure the LTA deserves too much critisism for that. I still feel that the women's side of the game is very healthy. I think we can hope for a few years of Baltacha, keovathong and possible South or O'Brian being around the 50 to 100 mark with hopefully Robson to get inside the top thirty.
