Liz loses 7-5, 6-4. Second best result of the day though after Cavaday.

No thats awful considering the number of BPs wasted and the fact her opponent sucks on grass. Very dissapointing result indeed :(

Nice try Liz. Had 2 break points in the second set, one per game, had she taken the one at 4-3* might have been able to sneak it to a third, and shame she wasn't able to level at 5-5.

"Awful" is the most ridiculous word to describe that - get a grip. She had 6 break points in total, 4 in one game, and that's the game she broke. She's ranked 450-odd places lower. Lepchenko ain't great on grass but she very nearly beat Mel, and is no slouch. Got a massive big lefty-serve and huge groundies. Liz did well to keep with her, and impose her game so well.

I'm proud of Liz's effort, and she should be. She is the only girl who lost who can hold her head high for doing herself justice. Just wish she could play like that every week and she'd get into the top 500.

Well done N C but what a waste and almost complete disaster. Or was it.

Oh dear! What a disappointing day.

Always difficult to assess given that our players' current ranking would indicate that they aren't likely to be competitive at this level at the moment. But they do have the advantage of getting plenty of practice on grass, so it was not unrealistic to expect a better set of results.

The really disappointing thing is the huge number of points on offer for a 1st round win in qualifying. The likes of Naomi Broady needed those points.

Broady did well too. I know she had better results last week but I really think you all seriously overrated her. She had a good week and has shown this year and even last year that she can compete with girls of this rank and at this level, but seriously, I think you have put WAY too much expectations on her. It seems that her game is completely held together by her serve, if she isnt serving GREAT as she seems to have been in the last few weeks, then there is A LOT about her game that can be attacked by the girls at this level, and thats probs what happened today. She just played a loose service game or two in the second and it was over.

Although it's a poor day, it is fairly similar to the last few years, as you have to go back to 2001 for a time when more than 2 survive round 1 (Karen Cross going on to qualify), and there have been a couple of years when no-one has won. Essentially there is a big gap between our fringe challenger players and top 200 level. I hope Naomi B's career path does not continue to follow Amanda's (qualify at Birmingham, lose having matchpoint(s) then fall away after the grasscourt season). At least Cav, the only player I thought had a chance of qualifying, given her draw and greater experience of winning matches over this level of opposition, remains to fly the flag.

naomi c seems to be on way back. But David you are correct big ask to get the girls to win 3 matches in arow at this level gutted about naomi B and Emily must be still not functioning properly. However now the dust has settled the girls need to work hard get their ranking inside top 250 so WCS would be more appropriate than QWC's

Someone over on WTAW did a report:

"- Watched a bit of Cavaday's destruction of Fujiwara. Jesus, she was playing well. Absolutely crunching the forehand. Probably one of the best performances of the day, I was impressed. " :D

Not much on Naomi but:

"Man I found a new favourite today, Vitalia Diatchenko. Interesting to see someone play double handed off both sides, it's not common these days. Anyway, she was pretty lucky to win, Broady choked when she had a big lead in the first set tie break, and was also a break up in the 2nd. Anyway, she has the most hilarious grunt...actually, it can't really be called a grunt, it sounds more like a little puppy barking. She squeals when she misses. She whacks balls against fences. She smashes her racquet. She swears. And this is when she's winning, I'd be intrigued to know what she's like when she's losing. I found her so entertaining I took some videos, I'll post them shortly. Broady is very un-British, she looks like she should be Russian, her figure is too good to be a Brit. Although her tennis fits her into the category nicely"

N.B :( Glad we didnt have to see her choke in the TB, lol.
